{"id":52246,"date":"2014-09-30T06:03:59","date_gmt":"2014-09-30T06:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=52246"},"modified":"2014-09-30T06:03:59","modified_gmt":"2014-09-30T06:03:59","slug":"over-3000-migrants-die-crossing-the-mediterranean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/09\/over-3000-migrants-die-crossing-the-mediterranean\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 3,000 migrants die crossing the Mediterranean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\">More than 3,000 migrants have died crossing the Mediterranean this year, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iom.int\/files\/live\/sites\/iom\/files\/pbn\/docs\/Fatal-Journeys-Tracking-Lives-Lost-during-Migration-2014.pdf\">report published on Monday<\/a>, the IOM said the 3,072 deaths made Europe the most dangerous destination for &#8220;irregular&#8221; migrants.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation said that some experts placed the toll three times as high.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s total is more than double the previous peak in 2011, and exceeds last year&#8217;s estimate over four times.<\/p>\n<p>Since January, 4,077 migrant deaths have occurred worldwide with 75% of fatalities happening in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The IOM&#8217;s 216-page report suggests that the high toll &#8220;likely reflects a dramatic increase in the number of migrants trying to reach Europe&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Its findings come just weeks after\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-29210989\">one of the worst recorded wrecks<\/a>, when a migrant boat carrying 500 passengers sank near Malta.<\/p>\n<p>Identifying those who die in such disasters is difficult. The IOM says few countries keep information on missing migrants or their deaths.<\/p>\n<p>William Lacy Swing, the IOM&#8217;s chief said it was &#8220;time to engage the world to stop this violence against desperate migrants&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It is believed that more than 40,000 migrants have died since 2000.
