"FishingThe Officer in-charge of Fisheries Law Enforcement and Education at the Aiyinase Marine Police Training School, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Addae, says light fishing is still being practiced in some coastal communities in the Western Region despite being outlawed by Parliament.

He said last year, the Marine Police Unit at Aiyinase in the Ellembelle District arrested eight fisher folks engaging in light fishing.

Out of the number, five were tried and convicted, while two persons were still being tried and one was discharged and acquitted.

ASP Addae disclosed this in a media interview at Miemia during the Fourth Edition of the Annual Regatta for fisher folks in the six coastal districts of the Western Region.

It was organized by Tullow Ghana Limited (TGL) and the Jubilee Partners in collaboration with the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council (GNCFC).

ASP Addae said the Marine Police Unit of the Police Service was keen on checking light fishing since the practice had adverse effects on the country’s fishing industry and warned those still engaging in illegal fishing practices to put a stop to it before the law caught up with them.

Nana Kojo Kondua IV, Western Regional Chairman of GNCFC, said over four million Ghanaians were engaged in fishing for their livelihoods, while 67 per cent of animal protein came from fish stock.

He added that there was therefore the need for effective fisheries governance to sustain the country’s fisheries resources.

The event aimed at strengthening friendship and togetherness among the fisher folks in the region to accelerate national development.

It was also to educate them on the dangers of bad fishing practices and to sensitize them on the fisheries laws to ensure compliance.

The participating districts included Jomoro, Ellembelle, Nzema East, Ahanta West, Sekondi-Takoradi and Shama.

They took part in canoe race, orange picking and tug-of-peace which generated a lot of excitement among the teams and spectators at Miemia beach.

Teams that excelled were presented with cash and assorted items.
