{"id":5039,"date":"2014-03-10T11:16:52","date_gmt":"2014-03-10T11:16:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=5039"},"modified":"2014-03-10T12:32:25","modified_gmt":"2014-03-10T12:32:25","slug":"tension-in-police-service-over-un-missions-age-limit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/03\/tension-in-police-service-over-un-missions-age-limit\/","title":{"rendered":"Tension in Police Service over UN missions age limit"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_5050\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5050\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IGP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5050\" alt=\"Mohammed Alhassan, IGP\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IGP-300x187.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IGP-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IGP.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5050\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mohammed Alhassan, IGP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There is seething tension in the police service over a new directive by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Alhassan, that stipulates an age limit for police officers eligible to serve on UN missions abroad.<\/p>\n<p>The directive dated December 15, 2013 and signed by the Director of Administration, DCOP Rose Bio Atinga on behalf of the IGP, states that: henceforth, police officers who have attained tne age of 55 and above, are not eligible to perform duties on UN missions.<\/p>\n<p>What seems to have exacerbated the tension among officers is the fact that the IGP who hit the retirement age of 60 last year, was awarded a two-year contract by the government amidst protestations from colleague officers, to enable him to hold on to his post to the chagrin of others who were eligible for the same position.<\/p>\n<p>According to the aggrieved top police officers who spoke to The General Telegraph on condition of anonymity, it was strange that such a directive could come from the IGP who\u00a0when at 58 years of age, was\u00a0in Liberia but noticing that the IGP mantle was about to fall on him, returned to Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, a top police officer said, adding: \u201cIf at the age of 58, he was serving on a UN mission and is now serving two years on contract after his retirement, why should he put an impediment in the way and deprive his subordinates aged 55 or above from going on a UN mission?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paper has gathered that currently over 200 police personnel had been shortlisted and are on standby for\u00a0participation in a UN mission. Among them are a number of police officers who are already in the 55-year bracket.<\/p>\n<p>Further information gathered indicates that currently, some of the top police officers on UN mission in the Sudan are themselves pensioners who, like the IGP, are serving on contract.<\/p>\n<p>A classical example given was ASP Adamu of Armoured Cars Squadron, Chief Inspector Asiamah (PIPS), ASP Adjei from the police headquarters who are all on UN missions on contract in the US.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of the police officers who spoke to the reporter, have appealed to President John Mahama, his vice who doubles as the chairman of the Police Council, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, and also to the legislature to step in to reverse the directives for peace to prevail in the Police Service.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: The General Telegraph<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is seething tension in the police service over a new directive by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Alhassan, that stipulates an age limit for police officers eligible to serve on UN missions abroad.
