The board chairman of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Tony Oteng Gyasi has resigned from his position.<\/p>\n
Citi Business News<\/strong>\u00a0sources within government confirmed that Oteng Gyasi, who is also the MD of Tropical Cables and Conductors Limited tendered in his resignation letter this week but the President is yet to respond to his letter.<\/p>\n Our sources say he cited health reasons in his letter of resignation, but some insiders suggest there could be more to his resignation than meets the eye.<\/p>\n [contextly_sidebar id=”kQHycR55mRaIqWHOlqROnjos9P3ulias”]Oteng Gyasi was appointed as ECG board chairman exactly a year ago in September 2013.<\/p>\n His resignation comes at a time when the power sector is going through challenges.<\/p>\n The country is going through another load shedding exercise, with the ECG coming under fire for not releasing a schedule.<\/p>\n Ghanaian households and businesses have endured a 2-week load shedding, attributed to the lack of gas supplies from Nigeria due to a strike by workers in the gas sector.<\/p>\n The Volta River Authority (VRA) had announced that as much as 500 megawatts of electricity would be shed as a result of the shortfall in gas.<\/p>\n The resignation of Oteng Gyasi may also be seen as a setback for the company.<\/p>\n The world bank in a June 2013 report titled ‘Energizing Economic growth in Ghana, criticized the previous \u00a0ECG board, noting that an organization of the size of ECG should have a ‘first rate board.’<\/p>\n The report further noted that\u00a0ECG\u2019s cash flow difficulties are “even worse than the profit and loss accounts would indicate beacuse of poor revenue collection and rising dollar denominated payment obligations”<\/p>\n It however noted that majority\u00a0of the factors responsible for ECG\u2019s poor financial condition are within its control.<\/p>\n Mr. Oteng Gyasi’s appointment at the time was seen a remedy to the World Bank’s criticisms over the quality of human resource at the helm of affairs at ECG,which is a key institution in Ghana’s energy sector.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n –<\/p>\n By: citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The board chairman of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Tony Oteng Gyasi has resigned from his position.
