Ghana\u2019s public debt increased by about GH\u00a25.2 billion from April to June this year.<\/p>\n
This measures about 9 percent increase in the debt level from GH\u00a258.4billion to GH\u00a263.6billion.<\/p>\n
This was revealed by the Bank of Ghana at its Monetary Policy Committee press conference yesterday where it announced it had maintained the policy rate at 19%.<\/p>\n
In terms of the ratio of the debt to GDP, it was at 55.4% at the end of June, same as it was at the end of March.<\/p>\n
The debt stock level has increased by about GH\u00a211.5billion in the first half of the year representing a 22% increase.<\/p>\n
Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Henry Kofi Wampah said \u201cof the total public sector debt, domestic debt constituted 43.9 percent and external debt was 56.1 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile government again missed its revenue target but managed to cut down on expenditure.<\/p>\n
Revenue and grants for the first half of the year hit GHS13.3billion against a target of GHS14billion.<\/p>\n
According to Dr Wampah, \u201cof this out turn, domestic revenue was GH\u00a212.9 billion, below the target of GH\u00a213.3billion.<\/p>\n
Total tax revenue amounted to GH\u00a210.2 billion, lower than the target of GH\u00a210.5billion and non-tax revenues was GH\u00a22.6 billion, compared to the budgeted target ofGH\u00a22.7 billion.\u201d<\/p>\n
Expenditure was at GH\u00a219.3billion against a target of 19.8billion. Dr Wampah indicates \u201cCompensation of employees was GH\u00a25.9 billion compared to a target of GH\u00a26.3 billion.\u201d This is about 57.8% of tax revenue.<\/p>\n
Interest payments totaled GH\u00a23.7 billion, against a target of GH\u00a24 billion.<\/p>\n
Provisional estimates shows the budget deficit for the first half of the year stood at 5.3percent of GDP against a target of 5.1percent.<\/p>\n
This is however lower than a deficit of 5.6% recorded for the same period last year.<\/p>\n
