The Headmaster of the Sekondi School for the Deaf in the Western Region has said the school’s creditors are threatening to cause his arrest following the school’s inability to settle its debts.

Kofi Frimpong in an interview with Citi News said the situation has arisen because government has failed to release funds needed to run the school.

“As I speak now, there is a creditor on me who wants to send me to the Police station for the fact that I have not been able to pay her money and I keep saying it is not my fault. It is the fault of the government and the GES [Ghana Education Service],” he complained.

The situation is the same in other government assisted special schools as students who turned up on re-opening day were asked to return home.

Government failed to release monies for the 2013 academic year and the schools have still not received funds for the 2014 academic year which began on Tuesday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”0xruejMjzpTIhxLWhBhvgzwnMiSo37ig”]The feeding fee which is only GHC 2.20pesewas per day is woefully inadequate, according to Mr. Frimpong, but he indicated they are in talks with the Director General of the GES and the Education Ministry for an upward adjustment.

“And so we are waiting for him to give us a positive response,” he said.

Mr Frimpong added that the school will remain closed until they receive enough funds from government.

He is however appealing to well meaning Ghanaians and corporate institutions to come to the aid of the school which serves physically challenged children in the whole of the Western Region and its surrounding areas.

According to him, parents who live in the hinterlands are not aware of the existence of special schools for children who are physically challenged.

He said his outfit is in dire need of transportation to visit such areas to sensitize parents on the benefits of sending their children with special needs to special schools for training.

Mr. Frimpong narrated that “he only vehicle we had an accident which crippled the driver and killed the former headmaster and another teacher. Even if someone is sick in the school, we have to carry them on our backs to the hospital.”
