{"id":48588,"date":"2014-09-17T16:41:55","date_gmt":"2014-09-17T16:41:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=48588"},"modified":"2014-09-17T16:41:55","modified_gmt":"2014-09-17T16:41:55","slug":"political-parties-divided-over-strong-room","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/09\/political-parties-divided-over-strong-room\/","title":{"rendered":"Political parties divided over strong room"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Political parties in the country are divided over calls by the Institute of Economic Affairs(IEA) for the Electoral Commission\u2019s strong room system to be abolished.<\/p>\n<p>The IEA says the strong room must be<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/09\/16\/scrap-strong-room-system-iea-to-ec\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"> eliminated to ensure that justice is served in any given election.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The EC\u2019s strong room has for many years served as a strategic location for collation of election results.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;R5WaM27WLLsjuslwWSM1y2tDReDNlAfn&#8221;]The Room has only the EC chair and a few representatives of political parties who peruse results that come in from different constituencies across the country before collating them.<\/p>\n<p>The IEA is convinced the Strong Room has outlived its usefulness and should be abolished.<\/p>\n<p>But speaking to <b>Citi News<\/b>, the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, George Lawson said the IEA\u2019s argument is baseless and should not be supported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you go to the Electoral Commission, they have not written strong room anywhere. They don\u2019t have a strong room, we have named it strong room\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t know what they are talking about. Every region knows results are declared at every polling station, \u2026so what are they saying?,\u201dhe quizzed.<\/p>\n<p>The General Secretary of the PNC, Bernard Monah on the other hand said \u00a0the IEA\u2019s call must be heeded to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do agree with the IEA in total that the concept of the strong room is not enhancing the independence of the Electoral Commission.
