{"id":47779,"date":"2014-09-15T16:22:19","date_gmt":"2014-09-15T16:22:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=47779"},"modified":"2014-09-15T16:25:58","modified_gmt":"2014-09-15T16:25:58","slug":"nrgi-warns-hedging-will-lead-to-massive-loses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/09\/nrgi-warns-hedging-will-lead-to-massive-loses\/","title":{"rendered":"NRGI warns hedging could lead to massive losses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) is warning that Ghana risks making some significant \u00a0losses if cabinet approves the hedging proposal from the Energy ministry.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry wants to start quarterly hedging to avoid huge debts accumulating from\u00a0subsidizing price differentials on petroleum products.<\/p>\n<p>Despite earlier reports that the Energy ministry will start hedging on September 1 ,2014, <b>Citi Business News<\/b> has learnt the proposal is yet to be presented to cabinet for approval.<\/p>\n<p>But the Africa Regional Co-coordinator of\u00a0 NRGI, formerly Revenue Watch, Emmanuel Kayole said,&#8221;\u00a0 it&#8217;s quite interesting that the ministry is thinking about it because you can actually win or lose by hedging&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>According to him the Ministry must be efficient in their calculations.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <b>Citi Business News<\/b> on the sidelines of a program organized by the International Institute of ICT in journalism, Pen Plus Bytes to train journalists in the oil and gas industry , Emmanuel Kayole\u00a0 said , &#8220;I just hope that the technical group that is doing the forecasting will get it right&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The move by the Energy ministry has received huge backlash from the minority in parliament and some think tanks , who have identified the continuous depreciation of the cedi as the main cause of the current volatility.<\/p>\n<p>However the Communications Consultant to the\u00a0Energy\u00a0Ministry,\u00a0Edward Bawa maintains the hedging proposal has been carefully prepared and takes account all the concerns raised by all stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>Early on Finance Minister Seth Tekper announced \u00a0a committee comprising the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and National Petroleum Authority \u00a0(NPA) to work on a hedging plan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By:\u00a0 Rabiu Alhassan\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) is warning that Ghana risks making some significant \u00a0losses if cabinet approves the hedging proposal from the Energy ministry.
