A former flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kofi Osei Ameyaw has told Citi News, despite bowing out of the flagbearership race, he still has the desire to lead the party someday.

Osei Ameyaw on Thursday announced he was dropping out of the race and declared his support fellow aspirant, Nana Akufo-Addo.

After escaping the elimination stage and making it onto the list of final five aspirants to contest the position, Osei Ameyaw on Eyewitness News explained that this is not the time for him to lead.

“I still want to be the flagbearer and the presidential candidate if those who matter; the delegates, will afford me the opportunity,” he remarked.

“Right now, it is not my time and that is why I am so grateful to the delegates who positioned me in the first five,” he said.

[contextly_sidebar id=”77fvjfqGvIRl31dzNIeVNJhbw9aXinTy”]He mentioned that his decision to bow out of the contest was informed by the wishes of the delegates who said to him during his campaign rounds that “the party wants to win 2016 and they believe that Nana Addo is the person that they want.”

In a related development, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Evans Aggrey Darko, has described Osei Ameyaw’s decision as “spot on.”

He said: “…sometimes, if it’s not your turn, you will be swimming against the tide so I think that his analysis of the situation for me is spot on.”

According to him, the former flagbearer aspirant is relatively young and his decision to quit the race is aimed at securing his political future in the NPP.

“For me, it’s pragmatism, that is what works, it is a realist perspective and it is what really works.”

Dr. Darko however urged the remaining contestants to engage in a very healthy competition “if they indeed they want to enjoy the future within the political party.”
