Despite the announcement by the presidential hopeful, Nana Akufo-Addo that he does not fear competition from any of the other candidates seeking to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP), some party members are still advocating for his contenders to bow out of the race.

A former Finance Minister under the Kufour administration, Yaw Osafo Marfo, has added his voice to calls for Nana Akufo-Addo to stand unopposed.

According to him, it is an open secret who will win the October 18 congress.

[contextly_sidebar id=”G4cMYJWH3eyjmuCpSDRjygx4ty90klZB”]He is therefore, appealing to the remaining three contestants “to voluntarily step down and prevent the election on the 18th of October because the endorsement is clear.”

The NPP will on October 18 organize a final congress where party delegates’ will elect a flagbearer to lead the party into the 2016 general elections.

Prior to this, the party organized a super delegates’ congress which saw the reduction of the number of candidates from seven to five as stipulated in the NPP constitution.

But following the overwhelming votes Nana Addo polled at the congress, the party leadership has been inundated with calls for the final congress to be called off.

According to some party members and other political commentators, the October 18 congress is needless since the outcome of the super delegates’ congress revealed which person is likely to lead the party.

Joe Ghartey, a flagbearer aspirant who made it onto the list of final five pulled out of the race.

Francis Addai Nimo after about two weeks of consultation has decided to contest in the October 18 congress despite the calls on him to back down.

The two others; Alan Kyeremanten, and Osei Ameyaw have also given indications they will contest.

But Osafo Marfo believes voluntarily opting out of the race will unify the party by putting an end to all internal bickering.

He dismissed claims that the choice of the about 700 delegates who voted in the super delegates congress does not reflect the true situation on the ground.

“The difference between delegates’ elections and national election is that you represent a group of people…and that is the essence of delegates’ elections.”
