Controversial former Member of Parliament (MP) for Lower Manya Krobo constituency, Michael Teye Nyaunu has challenged members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to contest President John Mahama in the party’s presidential primaries.

He was of the opinion that it will be wrong for President Mahama to stand for the flagbearership position unopposed.

“Somebody must contest against the sitting President. That is democracy being deepened,” he urged.

In the last NDC primaries, a fierce challenge was mounted against the late President John Mills which eventually led to a break away by the wife of the NDC founder, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.

The NDC has had similar challenges in the past, when Dr. Yaw Obed Asamoah had to break away with the defunct Democratic Freedom Party (DFP).

But Mr. Nyaunu says such occurrences only help to strengthen the party democratically, therefore, it should not be discouraged.

According to him, there is a possibility that another party member “can do better so people must compete, people must lace up their boots, begin to warm up and compete.”

Teye Nyaunu, popularly called MTN, has also urged on delegates to vote majority of the current executives out of office since in his estimation, they have woefully failed the party.

“I think the NDC leadership has got a lot of problems and the leadership of the NDC deserves to be changed. I say this emphatically without any hesitation,” he said.

The former lawmaker recalled that during the late President Mills’ tenure as leader of the party, there were unresolved leadership crisis therefore, it is imperative for them to be voted out.

“When he was the head, the crisis that we were having, the internal problems that we were having, I was expecting the party leadership to stand on its feet…for me, they have not performed well,” he said.
