The Ghana Police Service has debunked allegations that its men have been revealing the identity of informants, thus exposing them to reprisal attacks.

According to the Police, the over 200 informants they have had over the last two years have been well protected and rewarded.

This denial comes on the back of recent reports that the life of a 38-year-old man who for years had provided useful leads, resulting in the arrest of armed robbers and car snatchers in the Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, is being threatened after the Police failed to protect his identity.

But the Director of Police Public affairs, DSP Cephas Arthur is insisting the allegations are untrue.

“It is never true; it is erroneous that the Police will blow the cover of their informants,” he said.

[contextly_sidebar id=”cX1lMNE6cB8RmfxukSQ6QUC6pKa9EMr2″]DSP Arthur said that the Police is aiming to increase its number of informants, therefore they provide top-notch security to existing ones as a means of attraction for prospective informants.

“We get cooperation from the members of the public, we get information from informants but we want to increase the kind of relationships that we have with our informants,” he said.

The Police PRO laid the blame at the doorstep of the informants themselves, who according to him, give themselves away knowingly or unknowingly.

He explained saying, “anytime it occurs that some informant’s identity has been leaked, it will be through the same informants so contrary to the allegation that the Police blow their cover, it is they themselves.”

DSP Arthur mentioned the lifestyle, the attitudes and the pronouncements by informants are the factors which lead to their identities being known “so it is not the Police at all.”
