Government has released more cholera drugs to hospitals across the country to combat the disease.

Patients are reporting that although they are not to pay for the treatment of cholera, some health facilities request to be paid before treatment.

Tony Goodman, the Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Health has explained that the hospitals were charging patients because they had run out of stock of medical supplies.

“We were told they had some shortages of infusions they had to buy and we hope that should not be the case. So we’ve started giving them enough infusions to take care of patients. Those that were receiving those monies did that because they don’t want to turn away patients,” he said.

According to him, the various hospitals need to stabilize the conditions of patients and save as many lives as possible “so they had to collect these money at that time. But we are supplying them so that they will stop collecting monies.”

The cholera outbreak has affected over 10, 000 individuals and 92 deaths have so far been recorded.

Hospitals in the Accra metropolis have been overwhelmed with the large number of patients reporting daily to seek medical care.

The government is however seeking help from the World Health Organization (WHO) to assist health officials to battle the disease with oral vaccines.
