The former Chief Operations Officer of UT Group, Captain Rtd. Budu Koomson has criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for not implementing useful electoral reforms proposed by various political parties and other major stakeholders in the country.

During the election petition hearing, the Presiding Judge, William Atuguba, said the petition had exposed the need for certain electoral reforms.

The EC, in that regard, subsequently called on political parties to submit proposals for reforms of the electoral process after the ruling by the Supreme Court.

Budu Koomson believes the EC is obliged to consider and implement those proposals

“The EC is not an island on to itself, it has a constitution and they are mandated or obliged to manage the expectations of their customers [Ghanaians].”

Speaking at IMANI Ghana’s forum to commemorate one year of the election petition verdict, Captain Koomson further criticized the Commission for constantly dictating and imposing various decisions on Ghanaians without seeking their consent.

“The EC is conveniently refusing to interact with us [Ghanaians] so they can do what is it is and how they want things to be done”

He therefore asked the Commission to engage Ghanaians on a regular basis to ensure timely electoral reforms.

“They should engage us and periodically come and tell us what they we are doing. When they enagage with us on that regular level, they expose themselves so we can now put [pressure on them that you are going too slow or do something else otherwise two weeks to the time, they will dicate and we will just swallow.”
