{"id":42943,"date":"2014-08-29T11:54:47","date_gmt":"2014-08-29T11:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=42943"},"modified":"2014-08-29T11:54:47","modified_gmt":"2014-08-29T11:54:47","slug":"deputy-transport-minister-slammed-over-airline-comments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/08\/deputy-transport-minister-slammed-over-airline-comments\/","title":{"rendered":"Deputy transport minister slammed over airline comments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Business economist with Manchester Business School, Professor Pikay Richardson has slammed the Deputy Transport Minister, Joyce Bawa Mogtari on her defence that Ghana Airways was a viable venture.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42944\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42944\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/joyce.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42944\" alt=\" Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Deputy Transport Minister\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/joyce.jpg\" width=\"211\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42944\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Deputy Transport Minister<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Deputy Transport Minister early on told <b>Citi Business News<\/b> the erstwhile Ghana Airways was making profits before it collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Justifying government\u2019s move to establish the new airline, Joyce Bawa Mogtari said \u201cthe original Ghana Airways Company Limited was actually a viable company, making profits for many, many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Professor Pikay Richardson speaking to <b>Citi Business News<\/b> questioned how.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have known Ghana airways seized in Rome, in London, in Darkar because they haven\u2019t paid for fuel. That is not the mark of a successful company? I was surprised when they said it was successfully making money. Why did we disband it?\u201d he question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf an organisation is making enough money to pay for all its cost and even have a profit, why did we disband it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Pikay Richardson noted that Ghana Airways \u201cwas badly run\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know people who actually flew on Ghana Airways and paid nothing because they were connected. Traders went to London to buy goods and shipped them on Ghana Airways and paid nothing\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p>You cannot run an organisation that is supposed to be commercial on \u2018friendly and connection\u2019 basis.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Pikay Richardson also expressed support for calls by former chief of staff Kodjo Mpiani that the airline is not economically viable.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is this; it is not a matter of \u201cwe have money money to buy the planes and build an airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He recommends that if the new airline will be successful, government and its private partner must focus on hiring a competent management team.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, \u201cthe management of the organisation is the most important part. If you have the most sophisticated and modern airport and have the best planes in the world and the people managing these are poorly trained, poorly motivated, they can\u2019t be bothered and there will be no result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Manchester Business School Professor added that \u201cEmirates in Dubai did not have money when they were starting the airline. They had only 10million dollars, which doesn\u2019t buy 10% of a plane.
