{"id":42912,"date":"2014-08-29T15:42:22","date_gmt":"2014-08-29T15:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=42912"},"modified":"2014-08-29T15:58:15","modified_gmt":"2014-08-29T15:58:15","slug":"empower-ec-to-prosecute-offenders-iea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/08\/empower-ec-to-prosecute-offenders-iea\/","title":{"rendered":"Empower EC to prosecute offenders &#8211; IEA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Institute of Economic Affairs is asking for the empowerment of the Electoral Commission (EC) to prosecute persons who break the election law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This according to the institute would enable the EC to ensure sanity in the electoral system without fear or favour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The call comes after a year since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) dragged the Electoral Commission, President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to court over electoral irregularities in the 2012 Presidential Election which went\u00a0in favour of President Mahama.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After eight-long month of legal tussle the, Supreme Court declared President Mahama as legitimately elected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking on the <strong>Citi Breakfast Show<\/strong>\u00a0 on Friday, Dr Ransford Gyampo, a Research Fellow at the Governance Unit of the IEA said they have received a number of proposals for electoral reforms which the Institute has forwarded to the EC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u201cThe EC should be mandated to prosecute those who bring the electoral process into disrepute without necessarily seeking approval or advice or clearance from the Attorney General,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He indicated that the institute had also received a number of recommendations for electoral reform.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some of the suggestions included the need for the election date to be changed from December 7th to November 7th, the institutionalisation of IPAC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By: Godwin Allotey Akweiteh\/citifmonilne.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Institute of Economic Affairs is asking for the empowerment of the Electoral Commission (EC) to prosecute persons who break the election law.
