A non-profit making international development organization called SNV is committing three million US Dollars to help government improve the nation\u2019s sanitation.<\/p>\n
Funded by the Japanese government, SNV is constructing 32 new units of school latrines and rehabilitating 30 old ones in the Northern Region.<\/p>\n
The 62 projects are christened, \u201cResults Based Financing for Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene Project in the Northern Region.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the commissioning of one of the newly constructed projects in Damongo, SNV\u2019s country Director, Amanda J. Childress said the intervention sought to guarantee cleaner environment.<\/p>\n
She reaffirmed the SNV\u2019s constant support to Ghana\u2019s national development agenda.<\/p>\n
She praised the Japanese government for its financial commitment in the area of sanitation to eliminate preventable diseases such as cholera and diarrhea.<\/p>\n
According to Amanda J. Childress, almost 980 million children do not have access to sanitation for which reason SNV will not relax with its quest to overturn the situation.<\/p>\n
She said the expected impact of improved sanitation will include lower mobility rate in the population, lower mortality rate into diarrhea and overall cleaner environment.<\/p>\n
This in her expectation will improve the dignity and privacy of all and sundry especially girls and women.<\/p>\n
She said SNV will always ensure value for the money of its sponsors to achieve the organization\u2019s forward march of keeping Ghana clean.<\/p>\n
Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Julius Debrah said government was alarmed by the increasing number of cholera cases recorded for the year 2014.<\/p>\n
He attributed the situation to poor hygienic practices by citizens whose responsibility it is to always keep the environment clean.<\/p>\n
Julius Debrah challenged Ghanaians to adopt best hygienic practices in their localities.<\/p>\n
He asserted that past governments cumulatively underestimated the nation\u2019s poor sanitary conditions which resultant effect is increasing the recent cholera cases.<\/p>\n
Julius Debrah thanked the SNV and its development partners for their continual support to Ghana government in diverse ways.<\/p>\n
He encouraged District Chief Executives for the selected beneficiary districts to make sanitation their major priority.<\/p>\n
Practice Manager of World Bank, Alex Bakalian said an estimated total of 112,600 individuals in 75 communities of four districts in the Northern Region are to benefit from the projects.<\/p>\n
He observed that the projects were in line with the World Bank\u2019s funded Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Project which is being implemented in six regions in Ghana.<\/p>\n
Alex Bakalian impressed upon residents of the beneficiary communities to zealously maintain the projects.<\/p>\n
Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini on behalf of the chiefs and people of the region showed gratitude to the SNV, the World Bank and the Japanese government for the numerous projects executed across the region.<\/p>\n
He called on all to proactively deal with insanitary conditions in their communities.<\/p>\n
Mayor of Tamale, Abdul Rahaman Gundado on behalf of his colleagues from the other beneficiary districts expressed their appreciation to SNV and the Japanese government.<\/p>\n
He said it was incumbent on all citizens to say no to open defecation to control cholera and other related diseases.<\/p>\n
The beneficiary districts are Tamale Metro, Saboba, East and West Gonja.<\/p>\n
