{"id":411801,"date":"2018-03-22T05:35:02","date_gmt":"2018-03-22T05:35:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=411801"},"modified":"2018-03-22T13:27:33","modified_gmt":"2018-03-22T13:27:33","slug":"proposed-cargo-fumigation-levy-suspended-indefinitely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/03\/proposed-cargo-fumigation-levy-suspended-indefinitely\/","title":{"rendered":"Proposed cargo fumigation levy suspended indefinitely"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Government has ordered the indefinite suspension of the proposed fumigation levy for shippers.<\/p>\n<p>The policy, was aimed at fumigating all imported cargo upon arrival at the ports.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;Z8Zjxhu9kpgTivYMVCYWlZmMFMRWJfMb&#8221;]However, a statement signed by the Information Minister, Mustapha Hameed and copied to\u00a0<strong>Citi Business News<\/strong>\u00a0said, \u201cAfter extensive consultation between the government and various stakeholders, the Economic Management Team has instructed that the proposed fumigation levy for shippers be indefinitely suspended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Importers and Exporters Association, freight forwarders as well as the shippers association, have complained about the high cost of production the exercise would have brought on their businesses.<\/p>\n<p>They argued among others that cargoes are already fumigated at the port of origin.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, an additional fumigation upon arrival would increase cost and duplicate activities leading to possible delay in clearing goods.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the suspension is to bring all these concerns to rest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Govt suspends import VAT on phones, day-old chicks, others<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Government has also suspended the charging of<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/03\/21\/govt-suspends-import-vat-phones-day-old-chicks-others\/\"> import VAT on some 64 commodity groups <\/a><\/strong><\/span>effective Wednesday, March 21, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was arrived at after extensive consultation between the government and various stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Citi Business News<\/strong>\u00a0understands that the charges had been implemented since the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0of March this year.<\/p>\n<p>The traders of such commodities comprising mobile phones, day old chicks, outboard motors and electrical transformers, have resisted the taxes citing the high cost of operation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Pius Amihere Eduku\/citibusinessnews.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Government has ordered the indefinite suspension of the proposed fumigation levy for shippers.
