{"id":410398,"date":"2018-03-16T15:45:19","date_gmt":"2018-03-16T15:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=410398"},"modified":"2018-03-16T16:17:20","modified_gmt":"2018-03-16T16:17:20","slug":"china-build-new-ecowas-headquarters-gift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/03\/china-build-new-ecowas-headquarters-gift\/","title":{"rendered":"China to build new ECOWAS headquarters as &#8216;gift&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new headquarters for the Economic Community of West African States (<span class=\"caps\">ECOWAS<\/span>) will be built by China, the group confirmed in a press statement on Wednesday March 14, 2018.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<div class=\"article-content__text article-content__left-column\">\n<p>The political bloc and China have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (<span class=\"caps\">MOU<\/span>) for the projected that is expected to cost $31.6 million, an amount that will be provided by China as a grant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President of the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">ECOWAS<\/span>\u00a0Commission, Mr. Jean-Claude Brou and the Ambassador of China to Nigeria and\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">ECOWAS<\/span>, Mr. Zhou Pingjian signed for both parties in a bilateral meeting held at the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">ECOWAS<\/span>\u00a0Commission headquarters, Abuja,\u201d\u00a0the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of a new headquarters was initiated in 2012 but action on the said project takes immediate effect from the date of the signing of the deal.<\/p>\n<p>The project is expected to cater for a facility comprising offices and conference complex building, as well as road facilities, electrical equipment, parking lots and security posts within the proposed site of the project.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caps\">ECOWAS<\/span>\u00a0currently operates from three different building in Nigeria\u2019s administrative capital, Abuja. According to the President of the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">ECOWAS<\/span>\u00a0Commission that situation was necessitated by the increasing numbers of staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">ECOWAS<\/span>\u00a0designated authority and the China Development Bank Corporation will work together to verify records of account payments at regular intervals,\u201d the statement further clarified.<\/p>\n<p>The development emphasizes China\u2019s political and diplomatic investment in Africa. They built the African Union (A.U.) headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. They are also building a new parliament for Congo Republic and rebuilding the burnt premises in Gabon.<\/p>\n<p>China was accused in a French newspaper report of spying on the A.U. building.
