{"id":408109,"date":"2018-03-10T06:00:23","date_gmt":"2018-03-10T06:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=408109"},"modified":"2018-03-10T13:50:27","modified_gmt":"2018-03-10T13:50:27","slug":"police-must-focus-on-improved-training-of-personnel-amissah-arthur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/03\/police-must-focus-on-improved-training-of-personnel-amissah-arthur\/","title":{"rendered":"Police must improve training of personnel &#8211; Amissah-Arthur"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the police contend with the\u00a0increased crime rate in recent times, former Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, has advised the police hierarchy not to underestimate the importance of effective training to the overall performance of Ghana\u2019s security services.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to journalists in Accra on Thursday, Mr. Amissah-Arthur stressed that investing in training was also an investment in proactive policing.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;OGeod5Ku7smRHeDr0vvySTDs0LdveefG&#8221;]The former Veep, who was once the Chairman of the Ghana Police Council, admitted that the police have always been under-resourced.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I was chairman of the council, we procured armoured vests for them and so on. The IGP will be in the Flagstaff House and the Finance Ministry looking for resources, especially for training. I think that people are always looking for transport and so on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He reminded that &#8220;a world-class forensic lab&#8221; was established for the police under the previous government. He however questioned \u201chow useful it has been\u201d considering the lack of the needed skills in running it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think that training is also a\u00a0very important part. It will not show in new equipment that they can display at the Black Star Square on March 6, but maybe it is even more effective in interdicting the criminals before they are able to do harm to us. I hope they will also put a focus on the training,\u201d Mr. Amisah Arthur said.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, he said the police still had to act effectively to stem the recent crime wave that has seen a number of daylight robberies, some of which have resulted in deaths.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There must be ways by which the police; either through informants they have in the underworld, through training techniques, through the forensic capabilities, have to be able to stop the people who are committing these crimes,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GHc800m for police<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The government has already stated that it will allocate\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/02\/08\/ghc800m-for-police-helicopters-drones-in-the-offing-nana-addo\/\"><strong>GH\u00a2 800million<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to the Ghana Police Service to ensure improvement in its operations.<\/p>\n<p>The amount is to be used for the procurement of modern policing equipment and gadgets, including helicopters and drones, to enhance the capacity of the service in dealing with crime in the country.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_385645\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-385645\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-385645\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ambrose-Dery.jpg\" alt=\"Ambrose Dery\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ambrose-Dery.jpg 960w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ambrose-Dery-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ambrose-Dery-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-385645\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ambrose Dery, Interior Minister<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some aspects of this move have received some criticism though.<\/p>\n<p>President IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, urged the Minister of Interior to stop dreaming about procuring helicopters.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Cudjoe instead advocated for better police visibility on the streets to deter criminals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police service ought to be properly resourced but when they\u2019ve been so resourced, they shouldn\u2019t use it the way they want.
