The second Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Crabbe has defended the party’s General Secretary, stating that he does not need the approval of any committee to carry out his duties.

He said persons who are accusing Kwabena Agyapong for allegedly taking unilateral decisions without recourse to the laid down procedures are being vindictive.

“The General Secretary does not require approval from any committee to administer the secretariat. This is all in our constitution.”

He asked: “The fact is that these administrative actions have been exercised by former General Secretaries and it has not been a problem so why now?”

Some regional executives and party members have accused Kwabena Agyapong of doing the bidding of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) by causing chaos and anarchy in the NPP.

Some aggrieved youth therefore besieged the party’s headquarters on Tuesday with guns and knives threatening to hurt Mr. Agyapong while some called for his dismissal.

Some party leaders have since condemned the action undertaken by the irate youth.

Below is the full statement

“We cannot and should not attempt to run this party through committees. The constitution is clear that the Chairman runs the party, the Vices assist the chairman. The vices are assigned duties by the Chairman, NEC and NC. If they do not assign you to anything, you have no work!

The General Secretary runs the secretariat. With the exception of the National Organizer, all the secretariat staff, including the directors, are non-elected and are therefore subject to administrative orders and actions, which include the administration of annual leave.

The General Secretary does not require approval from any committee to administer the secretariat. This is all in our constitution.

The fact is that these administrative actions have been exercised by former General Secretaries and it has not been a problem so why now?!!!!

In the day to day administration of the party, certain actions may have to be taken by the Chairman and, or General Secretary. Let us not tie their hands. They should be able to take the decisions and later inform us!

If we have any problem with an action taken by any of them, between Steering Committee meetings, we go and ask them and not go to the media! We are a team. We rise together and fall together! Let no one think he or she can rise by tearing down any executive.

I am in Sweden I have no idea what happened. ..I was not consulted- and so what?!!! Need I be consulted in ALL THINGS?????? No!!!!

I trust my colleagues and I respect the delegates who elected them and understand that I do not have to be consulted at all times! I am NOT the Chairman I am NOT the General Secretary. I will support and protect them PUBLICLY at all times and express misgivings STRONGLY in private!

Yes we did discuss at the Steering Committee and all agreed that we need to make changes to help us run the office professionally! We even agreed on replacement names!

It was through changes that many of the staff are where they are now. Antwi Adjei, e.g, was relieved from his position to make way for Opare Hammond by Jake’s administration did he go to the press? Hammond of all people should understand that.

It is important that as executives, we understand our roles and responsibilities.

Nominations were opened. If anyone of us, executives, wanted to exercise the powers of Chairman or General Secretary, we should have filed to contest.

You cannot, as it were, use the ‘back door’ to get in and attempt to act as Chairman or General Secretary through committees!

Let’s UNITE for victory!”
