{"id":404774,"date":"2018-02-27T07:53:55","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T07:53:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=404774"},"modified":"2018-02-27T07:53:55","modified_gmt":"2018-02-27T07:53:55","slug":"saudi-king-replaces-military-chiefs-shake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/02\/saudi-king-replaces-military-chiefs-shake\/","title":{"rendered":"Saudi king replaces military chiefs in shake-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Saudi Arabia has sacked its top military commanders, including the chief of staff, in a series of late-night royal decrees.<\/p>\n<p>Saudi King Salman also replaced the heads of the ground forces and air defences.<\/p>\n<p>The news was published by the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), but no reason for the sackings was given.<\/p>\n<p>They come as the war in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition is fighting rebels, is nearing the end of its third year.<\/p>\n<p>Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also the defence minister, is believed to be behind various recent shake-ups in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Last year dozens of prominent Saudi figures, including princes, ministers and billionaires, were locked up in Riyadh&#8217;s five-star Ritz-Carlton hotel as\u00a0the prince led a drive against corruption and abuse of power.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/3B87\/production\/_100193251_044361330.jpg\" alt=\"Saudi soldiers at an airfield where military cargo planes land to deliver aid in Marib, Yemen January 26, 2018\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__crosshead\"><strong>Who is out? Who is in?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The service of the chief of staff, General Abdul Rahman bin Saleh al-Bunyan, is among those &#8220;terminated&#8221;, said the SPA.<\/p>\n<p>Various military figures have already been promoted to replace those sacked.<\/p>\n<p>A series of political appointments were announced at the same time, including the rare appointment of a female deputy minister of labour and social development, Tamadar bint Yousef al-Ramah.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/D7C7\/production\/_100193255_gettyimages-914463746.jpg\" alt=\"People at site of air raid in Yemeni capital Sanaa on February 5, 2018\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Prince Turki bin Talal was appointed new deputy governor of the south-west Asir province.
