A political science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) says Tuesday’s clashes at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) headquarters is an indication the party is in trouble .

“Looking at what is happening, one will not be far away to say that NPP is heading towards a disaster,” said Aminu Dramani.

Violence broke out on Tuesday at the NPP’s headquarters in Accra when some angry youth threatened to beat up their general secretary, Kwabena Agyapong for unilaterally ordering the party’s acting communications director to proceed on leave.

A number of people sustained machete wounds while the vehicle belonging to the NPP’s national women’s organizer, Otiko Djaba was vandalized.

Minutes before the incident, the chairman of the NPP, Paul Afoko addressed the media and clarified that the directive was endorsed by the party’s steering committee.

The party has warned the perpetrators will be punished but Dramani is of the opinion that the perpetrators should be handed over to the Police for prosecution.

He said: “Investigations must be carried out to have those involved arrested and prosecuted.”

He again advised that party executives who are exchanging insults and name calling in the media “should all be brought to book by the party because they are not only harming themselves, they are destroying the party.”

The political science lecturer described the situation as “disappointing” since the NPP is the biggest and most vibrant opposition party in Ghana.

Dramani urged the elders of the NPP to clearly define the roles of the current executives to enable them work as a team.

He further called for a revision of the party’s constitution to correct “ambiguities in terms of interpretations of some provisions.”
