A leading member of Ghana’s main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has appealed to Ghanaians to continue having faith in the party because all is not lost.

Ghanaians on Tuesday expressed a vote of no confidence in the NPP after a press briefing at the party’s headquarters turned bloody.

Angry youth of the party stormed the premises wielding machetes and pistols threatening to beat up their general secretary, Kwabena Agyapong for taking unilateral decisions.

Their anger was fueled by a directive given to Perry Okudzeto; the party’s acting communications director to proceed on leave.

The aggrieved youth claimed Mr. Agyapong had been bribed by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to divide the party ahead of the 2016 general elections.

On Eyewitness News, Professor Mike Oquaye said the party is poised to govern the nation and relieve Ghanaians from the current socio-economic challenges.

“Let me appeal to our teeming supporters, sympathizers and all those whose hope are on the NPP, let me assure them their hope is not lost.”

He cautioned the public not to associate Tuesday’s violence to the upcoming presidential elections of the NPP.

According to him, the incident “broke my heart” and once again appealed to Ghanaians to be rest assured that such incidents will be curbed to allow peace to reign in the NPP.

The former Dome-Kwabenya legislator acknowledged that disagreements are bound to happen but they will not be allowed to fester.

He disclosed that since the new executives took office, there have been teething problems within the NPP but senior members of the party have been meeting on a regular basis to address the issues.

“I want to assure that these difficulties are being taken care of and very serious top level meetings are going on… and they will continue,” he said.

Prof. Oquaye who is also the chairman of the constitutional and legal committee of the NPP served notice to the perpetrators of Tuesday’s violence will be sought out and brought to book.

He admonished party supporters to respect the human rights of every individual adding that all grievances must be addressed using the party’s laid down procedures.

He said if this rule is not adhered to, there is likelihood that there will be “unnecessary court cases.”
