{"id":40117,"date":"2014-08-19T06:38:59","date_gmt":"2014-08-19T06:38:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=40117"},"modified":"2014-08-19T06:38:59","modified_gmt":"2014-08-19T06:38:59","slug":"ebola-crisis-liberia-confirms-west-point-patients-missing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/08\/ebola-crisis-liberia-confirms-west-point-patients-missing\/","title":{"rendered":"Ebola crisis: Liberia confirms West Point patients missing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\">Seventeen suspected Ebola patients are &#8220;missing&#8221; in Liberia after a health centre in the capital was attacked, the government says.<\/p>\n<p>The government had previously denied they were missing, saying all patients had been moved to another facility.<\/p>\n<p>The Ebola outbreak, which has spread from Guinea to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, has killed at least 1,145.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for exit screenings on all travellers from affected countries.<\/p>\n<p>It wants checks at airports, sea ports and major land crossings.<\/p>\n<p>Several airlines have already stopped flying to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Cameroon has closed its land, sea and air borders with Nigeria, reports say.<\/p>\n<p>The Ebola outbreak in West Africa is the world&#8217;s deadliest to date. The disease has no known cure.<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Liberian Police dressed in riot gear deploy at a MSF, &quot;Doctors Without Borders&quot;, Ebola treatment center as they provide security in the city of Monrovia, Liberia, Monday, Aug. 18, 2014. \" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/77015000\/jpg\/_77015204_9855f182-d965-4378-b9cd-a681084cde80.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><\/div>\n<div>Security has been stepped up at health centres treating Ebola patients in Liberia<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the UN&#8217;s chief co-ordinator in Sierra Leone, David McLachlan-Karr, told the BBC that Ebola had spread to 12 out of 13 of the country&#8217;s districts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While Sierra Leone was the last affected of the three Mano River countries to have confirmed [cases] of Ebola, now it&#8217;s the country with the most cases,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>There have been at least 810 cases of Ebola reported in Sierra Leone, including 348 deaths,\u00a0according to WHO figures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Greatest setback&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The attack on the quarantine centre in Liberia, in Monrovia&#8217;s densely populated West Point township, took place on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>There are conflicting reports over what sparked the riot, in which medical supplies were stolen.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Health Minister Tolbert Nyenswah said the protesters were unhappy that patients were being taken there from other parts of the capital.<\/p>\n<p>Other reports suggested the protesters had believed Ebola was a hoax and wanted to force the centre to close.<\/p>\n<p>A senior police officer, speaking to the BBC on condition of anonymity, said blood-stained mattresses, bedding and medical equipment had been taken from the centre, potentially furthering the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The current outbreak is the deadliest since Ebola was discovered in 1976<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>On Monday, Liberia&#8217;s Information Minister Lewis Brown told the BBC that 17 of 37 inmates from the quarantine centre had gone &#8220;back into their communities&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said the authorities were now trying to track them down but said he was confident they would return.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most of the people that went into this holding facility came there voluntarily,&#8221; he told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So our impression is that they still want to be [there], but they were forcibly removed by vandals and looters, not because they wanted to leave; so we are sure that they will return.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said the attack on the quarantine centre was Liberia&#8217;s &#8220;greatest setback&#8221; since the Ebola outbreak began.<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"line\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/75306000\/jpg\/_75306515_line976.jpg\" width=\"464\" height=\"2\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Coloured transmission electron micro graph of a single Ebola virus, the cause of Ebola fever\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/76476000\/jpg\/_76476153_76475767.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Symptoms include high fever, bleeding and central nervous system damage<\/li>\n<li>Fatality rate can reach 90% &#8211; but current outbreak has about 55%<\/li>\n<li>Incubation period is two to 21 days<\/li>\n<li>There is no vaccine or cure<\/li>\n<li>Supportive care such as rehydrating patients who have diarrhoea and vomiting can help recovery<\/li>\n<li>Fruit bats, a delicacy for some West Africans, are considered to be virus&#8217; natural host<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"line\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/75306000\/jpg\/_75306515_line976.jpg\" width=\"464\" height=\"2\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Health workers flee<\/p>\n<p>Lindis Hurum, from medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), says there is an urgent need for a massive public awareness campaign in Liberia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some people don&#8217;t believe that it exists.
