Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has signed a contract extension until 2020, with the option of a further year.<\/p>\n
The 54-year-old\u2019s previous deal at Old Trafford was due to expire in 2019.<\/p>\n
Mourinho said he was \u201cdelighted\u201d that United \u201cfeel and trust that I am the right manager for this great club for the foreseeable future\u201d.<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cI would like to say a big thank you to the owners and to [chief executive Ed] Woodward.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Portuguese, appointed as Louis van Gaal\u2019s successor in May 2016, won the EFL Cup and Europa League in his first season.<\/p>\n
This season United are second in the Premier League, behind runaway leaders Manchester City, with the club still in the Champions League and FA Cup.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have set very high standards \u2013 winning three trophies in one season \u2013 but those are the standards I expect my teams to aim for,\u201d Mourinho added.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are creating the conditions for a brilliant and successful future for Manchester United. I love my players and it is a pleasure to know that we are going to be together for at least the next three years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Woodward praised Mourinho for his \u201cexceptional work rate and professionalism\u201d, as well as for \u201cembracing the club\u2019s desire to promote top-quality young players\u201d.<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cHe has brought an energy and a sense of purpose to everything that he does and I am sure that will continue to bring results for the fans and the club.\u201d<\/p>\n
Speaking at his news conference earlier on Thursday \u2013 before his new contract was announced \u2013 Mourinho hailed the club\u2019s recent signing of\u00a0Alexis Sanchez\u00a0from Arsenal.<\/p>\n
He said the Chilean had moved from a \u201cfantastic club to a giant club\u201d in the swap deal that saw Armenia midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan head the other way.<\/p>\n
Mourinho said it was \u201ca great deal for everybody\u201d and confirmed Sanchez will be in the squad for United\u2019s FA Cup fourth round tie at Yeovil on Friday.<\/p>\n
