{"id":393016,"date":"2018-01-19T10:07:33","date_gmt":"2018-01-19T10:07:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=393016"},"modified":"2018-01-19T11:13:36","modified_gmt":"2018-01-19T11:13:36","slug":"first-lady-commission-new-maternity-unit-kath-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/01\/first-lady-commission-new-maternity-unit-kath-today\/","title":{"rendered":"First Lady to commission new Maternity Unit at KATH today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo will today [Friday] January 19, 2018 commission the new Maternity Unit as well as a Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) for the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region<\/p>\n<p>The building, which cost some GHc10 million generated from public fundraising and donations, is expected to help reduce congestion and current deaths reported daily at the facility.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;qBkKwMiiyrpw6oq14Pzq4XXOeLhppKLT&#8221;]Available records show that a newborn baby dies every fifteen minutes with four babies dying every hour at the country\u2019s biggest referral hospital for people in the northern part of the country.<\/p>\n<p>But the new unit, which has over 15 incubators\u00a0and 3 emergency wards, will allow KATH take in four times the current number of infants and mothers and reduce avoidable deaths by 60-80%.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo who <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/05\/30\/first-lady-cuts-sod-for-ghc10m-kath-maternity-unit-photos\/\"><strong>cut the sod<\/strong><\/a><\/span> for the construction of facility in May 2017\u00a0has been raising funds towards the project together The Multimedia Group Limited.<\/p>\n<p>The project now houses the Maternity, Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care units at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More urgency needed to end maternal mortality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Akufo-Addo had earlier bemoaned the continuous death of women and children during childbirth worldwide, especially Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>The First Lady, while speaking at a Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA), described the situation as not only worrying but unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGhana could not achieve its millennium development goal target of 185 per 100,000 live births; we achieved 319 per 100,000 live births at the end of 2015.
