{"id":391899,"date":"2018-01-16T06:39:58","date_gmt":"2018-01-16T06:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=391899"},"modified":"2018-01-16T12:32:09","modified_gmt":"2018-01-16T12:32:09","slug":"mutawakilu-slams-nana-addo-over-tariff-reduction-announcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/01\/mutawakilu-slams-nana-addo-over-tariff-reduction-announcement\/","title":{"rendered":"Mutawakilu slams Nana Addo over tariff reduction announcement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Minority Spokesperson on Energy, Adams Mutawakilu, has accused the government of usurping the powers of the\u00a0Public Utilities Regulatory Commission [PURC], by\u00a0announcing a 14 percent average reduction in electricity tariffs for\u00a0non-residential users in the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/01\/15\/govt-reduces-electricity-tariff-14-businesses\/\">The announment\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>was made by\u00a0President Nana Akufo-Addo, but Mr.\u00a0Mutawakilu contends that &#8220;announcing the reduction when PURC hasn\u2019t even done the major tariff review is taking over the work of PURC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;cmje5mne9lbH9xDQjjYasTt72vxzxZIk&#8221;]&#8221;Government doesn\u2019t direct PURC. Government gives input to PURC. That is why it [PURC] is independent, and I have continued to warn that they are treating PURC as an agency or department under the Ministry of Energy,\u201d he said on <strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Before this assertion, Mr. Mutawakilu had claimed that proposals had not been made to the PURC to reduce electricity tariffs, as captured in the 2018 budget.<\/p>\n<p>But responding to the claims, the Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, said there were documents available to prove the proposal for reduction was sent as far back as November 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mutawakilu&#8217;s claims baseless<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also speaking on <strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong>, the Spokesperson for the Energy Ministry, Nana Damoah, said the Minority MP was only trying to smear the President.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The President is not saying that he as President has unilaterally taken a decision to review prices, so I wonder what Mr. Adams Mutawakilu is talking about.
