{"id":391507,"date":"2018-01-14T15:28:12","date_gmt":"2018-01-14T15:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=391507"},"modified":"2018-01-14T15:30:04","modified_gmt":"2018-01-14T15:30:04","slug":"french-salmonella-baby-milk-scandal-affects-83-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/01\/french-salmonella-baby-milk-scandal-affects-83-countries\/","title":{"rendered":"French salmonella baby milk scandal &#8216;affects 83 countries&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">More than 12 million boxes of powdered baby milk have now been recalled in 83 countries in a salmonella scandal involving French company Lactalis.<\/p>\n<p>The dairy firm&#8217;s CEO, Emmanuel Besnier, confirmed the extent of the contamination risk to French media.<\/p>\n<p>The products have been subject to a recall since December, after salmonella bacteria was discovered at a factory.<\/p>\n<p>Lawsuits have been filed by parents who say their children became unwell after drinking the formula.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman told the BBC that all the countries affected had been informed, in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa. The UK, US and Australia were not affected, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The Lactalis group is one of the world&#8217;s largest producers of dairy products, with annual sales of \u20ac17bn ($21bn; \u00a315bn), It has 246 production sites in 47 countries and employs 15,000 people in France alone.<\/p>\n<p>Recalls have now been issued by the firm three times, and cover its Picot, Milumel and Taranis brands.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/16C04\/production\/_99588139_lactalis.jpg\" alt=\"Lactalis products painted on a wall at the company's headquarters\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/>The Lactalis group employs 75,000 people around the world, according to its website<\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Salmonella can cause severe diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and severe dehydration. It can be life-threatening, especially in young children.<\/p>\n<p>So far 35 cases have been reported in France and another one has been confirmed in Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Another possible case is being investigated in Greece, French authorities said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>In an exclusive interview in French newspaper Journal du Dimanche,, the Lactalis chief executive denied the firm had attempted to hide the outbreak at the plant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are complaints and there will be an investigation with which we will fully collaborate,&#8221; said Mr Besnier.<\/p>\n<p>He also promised the company would compensate any families affected.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/9270\/production\/_99588473_factory.jpg\" alt=\"External photograph of Celia factory where outbreak has been traced back to.\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>The company has said they believe the contamination was caused by renovation work at their Celia factory in Craon, in north-west France.<\/p>\n<p>France&#8217;s agriculture minister said products from the factory will be banned indefinitely whilst the investigation is still ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>The French government has warned the company it must expect penalties over its handling of the affair.<\/p>\n<p>They also threatened to impose sanctions against retailers on Thursday, after it emerged that\u00a0several major supermarket chains had continued to sell products that could have been contaminated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 12 million boxes of powdered baby milk have now been recalled in 83 countries in a salmonella scandal involving French company Lactalis.
