{"id":391147,"date":"2018-01-13T07:01:56","date_gmt":"2018-01-13T07:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=391147"},"modified":"2018-01-13T07:12:01","modified_gmt":"2018-01-13T07:12:01","slug":"amidus-appointment-rekindles-hope-corruption-fight-cdd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/01\/amidus-appointment-rekindles-hope-corruption-fight-cdd\/","title":{"rendered":"Amidu\u2019s appointment rekindles hope for corruption fight \u2013 CDD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Executive Director Center for the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Professor Emmanuel Gyimah-Boadi has said the nomination of <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/01\/11\/need-know-martin-amidu\/\"><strong>Martin Amidu<\/strong><\/a><\/span> as the Special Prosecutor has raised\u00a0his belief in President Akufo Addo\u2019s commitment to the fight against corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a public discussion on the assessment of President Akufo Addo&#8217;s first year in office, the Executive Director of CDD Ghana said although his hopes have been rekindled, the actions of current government officials still cast some doubts about the government\u2019s overall anti-corruption fight.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;Vi5Y4oBWhJJEAoaMe5sc2lNL4PUvOVZW&#8221;]\u201cUntil yesterday, in my view, credible actions to curb corruption and address other governance challenges lagged behind\u2026yesterday\u2019s nomination of Mr. Amidu for the special prosecutor&#8217;s position has rekindled my hope that Nana Addo means business when he talks about combating corruption,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Gyimah-Boadi explained that Amidu has proven to be a very courageous person describing him as someone who has the tenacity to pursue corrupt officials from any side of the political divide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI say so because of Mr. Amidu\u2019s pedigree, his track record of anti-corruption and public interest litigation, his courage, his independence mindedness, his tenacity \u2013 all the attributes you will need for a job like that. And I also believe that this is an appointment that has the potential to strike fear in the people within and outside the president\u2019s own party. And we believe we can now look forward to robust actions to corruption,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amidu heads Special Prosecutor&#8217;s Office<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Martin Amidu, a member of the NDC and a former Attorney General, was named as the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/01\/11\/nana-addo-names-martin-amidu-special-prosecutor\/\"><strong>Special Prosecuto<\/strong><\/a>r by the President today, Thursday, January 11, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>He is expected to be vetted and approved by Parliament in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>Amidu&#8217;s appointment has been hailed by many as a masterstroke giving his own outspokenness against perceived acts of corruption by state officials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Wise and prudent\u2019\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A former Commissioner on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Emile Francis Short, commended the President on the appointment of Martin Amidu as the country\u2019s first Special Prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, this is a clever and <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2018\/01\/11\/appointing-amidu-as-special-prosecutor-wise-and-prudent-emile-short\/\"><strong>judicious decision<\/strong><\/a><\/span> on the side of the President in his efforts to fight corruption, saying the President should be congratulated.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Godwin Akweiteh Allotey\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Executive Director Center for the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Professor Emmanuel Gyimah-Boadi has said the nomination of Martin Amidu as the Special Prosecutor has raised\u00a0his belief in President Akufo Addo\u2019s commitment to the fight against corruption.
