Hundreds of people within the Eastern Corridor enclave of the Northern Region today (Monday<\/span><\/span>) kick-started the New Year with a massive peaceful demonstration in support of plans to create a new region from the territory.<\/p>\n The demonstration formed part of a series of activities lined up by a group calling itself the Coalition of Eastern Corridor Youth to push the government to carve the Eastern Corridor out of the Northern Region.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The participants, clad in red and black T-shirts and armbands, came from all corners of the Eastern Corridor enclave.<\/p>\n They held placards with inscriptions such as, \u201cWe need the Eastern Corridor Region,\u201d \u201cCreation of new region cannot withdraw the powers of Yaa-Naa,\u201d \u201cDagbon lands are safe: with eastern corridor region fear not,\u201d \u201cGovernment you can\u2019t fail the youth,\u201d and \u201cLet the youth decide on their future.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Coalition\u2019s leadership has vowed not to kowtow to pressure from any external forces to back down their request.<\/p>\n The Acting Yendi Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Kwapong Patrick deployed heavy security personnel to maintain law and order.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n He commended the organizers for their utmost compliance with the police directives.<\/p>\n Chief Superintendent Kwapong Patrick reiterated the need for residents of area to remain law abiding.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Genesis<\/b><\/p>\n Since government declared its intention to create additional regions, some chiefs and the youth of the Eastern Corridor enclave have consistently\u00a0reminded government of the need to prioritise the\u00a0creation of the new region in the area.<\/p>\n It would be recalled that the chiefs and people of the Eastern Corridor enclave on November 23, 2017, raised alarm over the area\u2019s exclusion from the sittings of the Commission of inquiry on the creation of new regions.<\/p>\n At a Durbar in Yendi, they decried the area\u2019s exclusion from the list of regions under consideration.<\/p>\n The Convener of the durbar, Peter Amana, earlier in a\u00a0Citi News<\/strong>\u00a0interview, said they had made multiple\u00a0requests for a new region ahead of the 2016 polls.<\/p>\n He emphasized that some of the chiefs in their speeches, had reminded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo during his two \u201cThank you\u201d tours of the region.<\/p>\n Peter Amana insisted that their proposal had no tribal or political undertones.<\/p>\n
