It is because of the difficulty of an NPP lawyer as the Attorney General trying to prosecute offenders within the NPP government that we decided that, let us get an independent prosecutor,\u201d the NDC General Secretary said.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that appointing another NPP lawyer will be tantamount to having \u201ctwo lame-duck Attorney Generals who can only prosecute members of a past government and not deal with members of the sitting government. That is the wrong way of fighting corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parliament\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/contextly.com\/redirect\/?id=zgoDqyvdUO:375888:2934:13:::sidebar:5a457cc4dbe712-54125965\">passed<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the Office of the Special Prosecutor Bill in November 2017 after its third reading marking the fulfillment a major NPP promise.<\/p>\n<p>When operational, it is hoped the Special Prosecutor\u2019s office will be independent of the Executive, which observers believe will allow it to adequately\u00a0deal with corruption-related issues that have plagued past governments.<\/p>\n<p>The Bill defines the modalities for the appointment and operations of the Special Prosecutor, which will have the mandate to investigate and prosecute cases of alleged corruption under the Public Procurement Act 203 Act 63 and other corruption-related offenses implicating public officers, political office holders and their accomplices in the public sector.<\/p>\n<p>The NDC has expressed concern over a possible witch-hunt, but the Akufo-Addo administration has been quick to assuage such fears, with the President consistently assuring that NDC officials\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/11\/21\/fear-not-no-witch-hunt-from-special-prosecutor-nana-addo\/\">will not<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0be unduly targeted.<\/p>\n<p>The Ranking Member on Parliament\u2019s Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Inusah Fuseini, also noted that the Office of the Special Prosecutor was going to be <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/11\/15\/special-prosecutors-office-open-to-abuse-inusah-fuseini\/\">open to abuse<\/a><\/strong><\/span> like any other political appointment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not saying that it is not a political setup by the NPP for the purpose of the NPP. I am saying that it is a political office, established in pursuant of a political promise.
