The Police Anti- Human Trafficking Unit in collaboration with Challenging Heights, a non-governmental organization (NGO), has intercepted 33 children being trafficked to Yeji at Bunso Junction.<\/p>\n
Briefing the press at\u00a0\u00a0Koforidua, the Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Police Service, Assistant Superintendent\u00a0\u00a0of Police( ASP)Yaw Nketia-Yeboah,\u00a0\u00a0said\u00a0\u00a0the children were in different vehicles when they were found.<\/p>\n
He said the children were coming from Ada, Ningo, Dowenya, Tema, Sogakope, Jita, Tefle and\u00a0\u00a0other communities along the coast when they were kidnapped.<\/p>\n
ASP Nketia-Yeboah\u00a0said some of the children claimed they were visiting their parents to collect their school fees while others said they were visiting their parents to spend the vacation.<\/p>\n
ASP Nketia-Yeboah said the Police are\u00a0conducting investigations into the matter and advised\u00a0parents not to allow their children to travel alone for long distances.<\/p>\n
He appealed to drivers, passengers and Ghanaians to notify the police of any minor who is travelling alone or travelling with a stranger.<\/p>\n
Mr. James Kofi Annan, the President of Challenging Heights, Ghana said there are over 21,000 children in slavery at Yeji as a result of child trafficking.<\/p>\n
He said his outfit has been able to save 1,200 children from slavery so far.<\/p>\n
Superintendent of Police Patience Quaye, the Director of Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Police Service, also complained about court cases involving child traffickers and called for support from the Ministry of Gender, Women and Social Protection.<\/p>\n
