{"id":385275,"date":"2017-12-21T19:55:10","date_gmt":"2017-12-21T19:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=385275"},"modified":"2017-12-22T06:34:21","modified_gmt":"2017-12-22T06:34:21","slug":"ghc2-6m-was-raised-for-expatriate-business-awards-alan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/12\/ghc2-6m-was-raised-for-expatriate-business-awards-alan\/","title":{"rendered":"GHc2.6m was raised for Expatriate Business Awards &#8211; Alan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GHc 2,667,215 was raised for the controversial\u00a0Ghana Expatriate Business Awards, according to the Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyeremanten.<\/p>\n<p>President Nana Akufo-Addo, who asked Mr. Kyeremanten to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/12\/21\/no-wrongdoing-by-trade-ministry-in-expatriates-saga-nana-addo\/\">clear the air<\/a><\/strong><\/span> on the matter, has concluded that there was no wrongdoing, after he received a report from the Minister.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;7EMojn3TlMZwzCBd2xRSGEYQaFdpjR7k&#8221;]The Ministry was alleged to have charged between $25,000 and $100,000, to enable expatriates to\u00a0sit close to the President at the awards ceremony, which was organised by the Millennium Excellence Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>In line with accountability, Mr. Kyeremanten, in a statement disclosed that, &#8220;an\u00a0amount GHc 2,667,215 was raised for the event, of which receipts were issued, as against an expenditure of GHc 2,367,426.06.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Reiterating earlier assertions from the Trade Ministry, Mr. Kyeremanten explained that, the Millennium Excellence Foundation was totally in charge of the structure and distribution of the sponsorship package for the event, although it was operating under guidelines provided by the Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>As part of arrangements towards the organisation of the event, the Ministry of Trade and Industry insisted that, all monies raised in support of the event be paid into an account held by the Ministry \u201cto ensure financial integrity and accountability which the organizers agreed to.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_380292\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-380292\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-380292\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Mubarak-Muntaka.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"330\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-380292\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka,Member of Parliament for Asawase<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Minority in Parliament has maintained that, there was some wrongdoing by ministry, and has indicated that, it is ready to appear before any investigative body to provide evidence in the form of receipts to support their claims of extortion.<\/p>\n<p>The Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, also wants Parliament\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/12\/21\/parliament-must-probe-alleged-trade-ministry-extortion-muntaka\/\">to set up a committee<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to probe the alleged extortion.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0Mr. Kyeremanten in his statement said it was &#8220;difficult to imagine how a government institution seeking to extort monies from individuals would insist on issuing official receipts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that, the Foundation was \u201cspecifically instructed not to collect any monies to place persons or organisations on the Presidential High table for the evening, and they provided assurances that this would not happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that, \u201cfor the avoidance of doubt, none of the individuals or companies who sat on the Presidential High Table at the event made a contribution of $100,000 prior to the event as being alleged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Mr. Kyeremanten, there were even individuals seated at the Presidential High Table &#8220;who did not make any monetary contribution before or after the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the information available to the Ministry, there was no extortion of monies from any expatriate business owner as being alleged.
