{"id":383795,"date":"2017-12-16T08:56:18","date_gmt":"2017-12-16T08:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=383795"},"modified":"2017-12-16T09:13:29","modified_gmt":"2017-12-16T09:13:29","slug":"nigerian-law-graduate-denied-call-bar-wearing-hijab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/12\/nigerian-law-graduate-denied-call-bar-wearing-hijab\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian law graduate denied call to bar for wearing hijab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A Nigerian law graduate has been denied her call to the bar after insisting on wearing a hijab during the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Amasa Firdaus was refused entry into the hall at the law school at the University of Ilorin where the ceremony took place.<\/p>\n<p>She refused to remove her hijab, insisting instead on wearing the wig on top of her headscarf, local media say.<\/p>\n<p>This was deemed as going against the dress code set by her law school, the university says.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/thenigerialawyer.com\/nigerian-law-student-not-called-to-bar-because-of-hijab\/\">Ms Firdaus described the actions of the Nigerian law school as &#8220;a violation of her rights&#8221;, according to reports.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The case has attracted significant attention on social media.<\/p>\n<p>A female Instagram user said Ms Firdaus was within her rights.<\/p>\n<p>One Twitter user, Juliet &#8216;Kego, said it was an example of sexism in Nigerian society.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-383796\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Tweet-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"454\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Tweet-1.jpg 454w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Tweet-1-300x151.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, Tobechukwu Ekwunife said Ms Firdaus should respect the no-hijab rules of the law school.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-383797\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Tweet-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"478\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Tweet-2.jpg 478w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Tweet-2-300x146.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 478px) 100vw, 478px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Nigerian law graduate has been denied her call to the bar after insisting on wearing a hijab during the ceremony.
