The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has issued a 1-week ultimatum to illegal settlers at Mempeasem, a suburb of East Legon in Accra, to leave the area or face demolition.<\/p>\n
The Assembly says it has identified about 500 settlers in the area. Some of the settlers were managing piggeries and have illegally allocated to themselves portions of land.<\/p>\n
According to the AMA, their actions have given rise to criminal activities in the area.<\/p>\n
The AMA Coordinating Director, Sam Ayeh-Datey, made this known when the Assembly conducted an assessment in the area as part of\u00a0efforts to make Accra a clean City under the National Sanitation Day programme on Saturday.<\/p>\n
He said the ultimatum to the illegal settlers followed persistence public complaints about stray pigs within the East Legon community, which they said posed health challenges.<\/p>\n
The Coordinating Director said the situation did not promote a healthy relationship between the city authorities and the residents in such a first class residential area.<\/p>\n
