{"id":379592,"date":"2017-12-03T08:36:10","date_gmt":"2017-12-03T08:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=379592"},"modified":"2017-12-03T08:36:10","modified_gmt":"2017-12-03T08:36:10","slug":"un-must-investigate-slave-trade-reports-in-libya-lawyer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/12\/un-must-investigate-slave-trade-reports-in-libya-lawyer\/","title":{"rendered":"UN must investigate &#8216;slave trade&#8217; reports in Libya \u2013 Lawyer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Private legal practitioner, Rainer Akumperigya, wants the United Nations (UN) to constitute a commission to investigate reports of slave auctions in Libya.<\/p>\n<p>About two weeks ago, footages from CNN of youth from Sub-saharan Africa being sold at slave markets in Libya went viral, attracting International criticism.<\/p>\n<p>The heartbreaking images also showed some migrants being tortured to death by individuals in Libyan military wears.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a wave of condemnations across Africa, especially due to the silence of the continent\u2019s leaders and groups like the AU and ECOWAS over the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on <strong>Citi FM<\/strong>\u2019s News analysis and current affairs\u00a0 programme, The Big Issue, Rainer Akumperigya said,\u00a0 it was essential for an external body, \u00a0such as the UN , to establish the facts and ensure sanctions against individuals and entities behind the inhumane act.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_379593\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-379593\" style=\"width: 671px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-379593 \" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Rainer-Akumperigya-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"671\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Rainer-Akumperigya-2.jpg 586w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Rainer-Akumperigya-2-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-379593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Private legal practitioner, Rainer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe UN might have to investigate this, set up a commission, because in the absence of the organized system within Libya, we might have to resort international laws, but the fact must be known first\u201dhe said.<\/p>\n<p>The Libyan government is reported to have said it did not have an organized system to investigate the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the facts started emerging, I read one of the reactions from a media house in Libya, trying to whitewash it and to say that this was a cooked up story and that CNN had faked it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Lawyer thus believes if an external investigative body is involved, it will be able to investigate properly to clear our conscience as to whether this was an attack based on ethnicity or race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we have an external investigative body establish the facts and know the extent to which the crime has been committed, we may be looking at ethnic profiling here. If you look at the video and the pictures, it was basically black Africans, so was this a more target race issue\u201d? he asked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>127 Ghanaians repatriated\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/11\/30\/127-ghanaian-detainees-in-libya-return-home\/\"><strong>Some 127 Ghanaians<\/strong><\/a><\/span> were last week rescued from Libya after reports that these Ghanaians and some other black Africans were reported to have been subjected to inhumane treatment after giving away their life\u2019s earnings and making torturous journeys through the Sahara hoping to make it big in Europe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Group petitions AU to investigate \u2018slave trade\u2019 in Libya<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a related development, a civil society group known as \u201cThe Future Group,\u201d has <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/12\/02\/group-petitions-au-to-investigate-slave-trade-in-libya\/\"><strong>petitioned the African Union<\/strong> <\/a><\/span>(AU), to investigate reports of a supposed modern day slave trade in Libya.<\/p>\n<p>The group said the reports are \u201cheart wrecking\u201d and are \u201cvery serious crimes against humanity\u201d hence AU must take up the issue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Farida Yusif\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Private legal practitioner, Rainer Akumperigya, wants the United Nations (UN) to constitute a commission to investigate reports of slave auctions in Libya.
