<\/p>\nWorld Vision Ghana(WVG), has constructed and handed over eighteen(18) boreholes and several\u00a0 latrines to schools and health centers in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region to mark this year’s World Toilet Day.<\/p>\n
This year’s World Toilet Day was on the theme: Wastewater; Improved latrine for every household by 2030, aimed at achieving the sustainable development goal six.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the commemoration this year’s toilet day in Boya, World Vision Cluster Manager for Bawku West District, Rexford Bugre, underscored the essence of proper sanitation and access to clean and safe toilets for all.<\/p>\n

He stressed that ” ‘Poo Poo’ must be deposited into hygienic toilets or in a sealed pit or tank separated from human contact, while latrine emptying services must move ‘poo poo’ to treatment centers where they can be processed into fertilizer and used for energy generation”<\/p>\n
As part of activities to mark the day, WVG commissioned six toilet facilities with changing room each for the Kusanaba Senior high school, Tonde health center, and the Boya primary and health center respectively.<\/p>\n
Mr. Bugre said, World Vision International (WVI) was committed to ensuring the well-being of vulnerable children and their families through the provision of access to clean and safe water as well as achieving open defecation free.<\/p>\n
“In the year 2017, we have under the GI-WASH project completed 18 boreholes and 4 small water mechanized systems for Tonde and Sitande communities. We have also supported the construction of several latrines under the Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), leading to the certification of 22 communities open defecation free(ODF).<\/p>\n

The cumulative total achievement for communities certified ODF now stands at 30 communities out of which 5,569 people, are having access to improved sanitation for defecation.<\/p>\n
Additionally, 835 household latrines have been constructed by community members for use”.<\/p>\n
Mr. Bugre added that, ten basic schools have been supported with sets of hand washing materials to 3,338 beneficiary school children under the 13- SHEP and GI-WASH projects to enhance the practice of proper hand washing.<\/p>\n

He also called on religious leaders, parents, teachers and the general public to commit to the fight against teenage pregnancy and child marriage in the area.<\/p>\n
