{"id":376693,"date":"2017-11-23T07:23:46","date_gmt":"2017-11-23T07:23:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=376693"},"modified":"2017-11-23T07:31:38","modified_gmt":"2017-11-23T07:31:38","slug":"govt-to-merge-adb-nib-into-national-development-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/11\/govt-to-merge-adb-nib-into-national-development-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov\u2019t to merge adb, NIB into National Development Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Citi Business News<\/strong>\u00a0has gathered that government is planning to merge the National Investment Bank (NIB) and the Agricultural Development Bank (adb) to form the National Development Bank announced in the 2018 Budget.<\/p>\n<p>Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta during the presentation of the 2018 Budget in parliament last Wednesday announced that government will launch a National Development Bank to focus on the Agricultural and Industry sectors.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;rA4q9ECVbKcs3oaWcLloPlfGU1PoFuXg&#8221;]Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta also stated that government is planning to launch the National Development Bank with a seed capital of 500 million US dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Sources tell\u00a0<strong>Citi Business News<\/strong>\u00a0government intends to launch the bank in December or early 2018 to provide cheap credit to players in the agricultural and industrial sectors of the economy.<\/p>\n<p>The adb was formed to focus on investing in the agricultural sector but the bank has seen less investment into the sector.<\/p>\n<p>NIB has also struggled to fulfill its main responsibility of investing in the industry sector.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Economist and Head of the Economics Department at the University of Ghana, Professor Peter Quartey has lauded government\u2019s decision to launch a National Development Bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current system where adb, NIB are not giving the sectors the needed finance, we need to create a new bank that will serve that purpose.
