<\/p>\nArsenal beat down claims of a north London power shift as goals from Shkodran Mustafi and\u00a0Alexis Sanchez\u00a0sealed a brilliant 2-0 win over rivals Tottenham.<\/p>\n
Spurs have\u00a0been hailed as the dominant force in this fiercest of rivalries of late, but the Gunners proved they are still a force to be reckoned with.<\/p>\n
Arsenal\u00a0grabbed both of their goals in an entertaining first-half, which also saw Harry Kane force a save from Petr Cech and\u00a0Christian Eriksen\u00a0hit the post for the visitors.<\/p>\n
But overall, Spurs just weren’t at the races as the hosts controlled the game, with\u00a0Mesut Ozil\u00a0particularly impressive\u00a0as Arsenal claimed their first north London derby victory in seven attempts.<\/p>\n

However, headlines will surely be dominated by the performance of referee\u00a0Mike Dean, whose decision-making was called into question for both of Arsenal’s goals.<\/p>\n
Spurs were raging when\u00a0Davinson Sanchez was adjudged to have fouled namesake Alexis, when it appeared to be a brilliantly-timed challenge. The resulting free-kick was whipped into the box by Ozil and\u00a0Mustafi was there to loop a fine header beyond the reach of Hugo Loris and into the net.<\/p>\n

The Gunners doubled their lead just five minutes later, as Chilean Sanchez lashed in from close-range following Alexandre Lacazette’s cutback, although replays suggested\u00a0Lacazette may have been marginally offside when played through on the right flank.<\/p>\n
But few could argue with the result as Arsene Wenger’s side beat Tottenham at their own game, showing themselves faster, stronger and hungrier than their opponents in every department.<\/p>\n

The three points\u00a0moves Arsene\u00a0Wenger’s side up to fifth in the table, just one point behind Mauricio Pochettino’s men.<\/p>\n
If Arsenal could produce this sort of ruthless performance more consistently, they would surely be title contenders.<\/p>\n

Harry Kane wore a bandage around his right knee but he and Dele Alli, who both pulled out of England duty last week, were deemed fit enough to start although Harry Winks dropped to the bench.\u00a0 Lloris shook off a groin strain and\u00a0Danny Rose was a curious omission from the squad.<\/p>\n
For Arsenal, Lacazette was handed a starting spot up front but\u00a0Jack Wilshere\u00a0and Alex Iwobi were only among the substitutes.<\/p>\n
Arsenal were all over Spurs from the outset, with Eric Dier’s pass out under pressure falling straight to Sanchez but Lacazette fired over.<\/p>\n
It was a warning of what was to come and while a mix-up between Mustafi and\u00a0Laurent Koscielny\u00a0allowed Kane a rare sight of goal, Arsenal were soon pulverising their opponents with wave after wave of attack.<\/p>\n

Ben Davies\u00a0seemed a particular target, with several openings coming down Tottenham’s left, as\u00a0Hector Bellerin\u00a0and Mesut Ozil both fired dangerous balls across the box.<\/p>\n
It was no more comfortable for Davinson Sanchez on the opposite flank as he was harried into playing a limp back-pass to Lloris, who just scrambled away ahead of the chasing Lacazette.<\/p>\n
Christian Eriksen, virtually anonymous until this point, clipped the post with a dragged shot but it was no surprise when Mustafi headed Arsenal in front in the 36th minute.<\/p>\n
Arsenal were fortunate to win the free-kick for the slightest of shirt-pulls from Davinson Sanchez on Alexis Sanchez before Mustafi climbed above the rooted\u00a0Jan Vertonghen\u00a0to head in at the far post.<\/p>\n
Tottenham were rattled but five minutes later they were two down. Lacazette nipped in between Vertonghen and Davies, squared to Sanchez, who bundled in at the near post.<\/p>\n
Lacazette’s arm looked on replay to have just been offside and Spurs assistant Jesus Perez waited to give Dean an earful in the tunnel at half-time.<\/p>\n
The visitors could hardly argue with the scoreline, however, although they came out with renewed impetus after the break. Kane wanted a penalty for Sead Kolasinac cutting across him and seconds later drew a last-ditch block from Mustafi.<\/p>\n
But while Arsenal dropped deeper, content to allow their opponents more possession, Tottenham struggled to find a breakthrough.<\/p>\n
Wenger’s decision to take off Lacazette was greeted by boos. However Pochettino hauling off both Kane and Alli prompted celebrations from the home support.<\/p>\n
Dier’s header drew an acrobatic save from\u00a0Petr Cech\u00a0and substitute Son Heung-min could have created a nervy finish if he had done better with two half-volleys late on.<\/p>\n
As it was, Arsenal played out a surprisingly comfortable victory.<\/p>\n
