The Ministry of Youth and Sports has denied claims that the members of Ghana’s athletics team who participated in the Commonwealth Games have threatened to seek asylum in Scotland after the games.<\/p>\n
There were reports that Ghanaian athletes who participated in the\u00a0just ended Commonwealth Games threatened to seek asylum in Scotland if officials failed to make full\u00a0payment of their allowance\u00a0of $3,500, following an initial\u00a0payment of $2,400.<\/p>\n
Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Vincent Oppong Asamoah said all athletes were paid fully before they left Scotland for Accra.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe promised them $3,500 and we were able to pay everything before we left Scotland,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He expressed shock at the news insisting that \u201cthis particular publication came before the final payments were made.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Deputy Minister criticized the author of the said publication for failing to seek a response from the officials before putting the news out.<\/p>\n
Mr. Asamoah explained that the allowances were paid in two installments \u201con that very Thursday; that was when we cleared the outstanding balance and all we paid everything before we left Scotland.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018We don\u2019t owe them a pesewa,\u201d he maintained.<\/p>\n
Ghana failed to shine during the 11-day sporting event, clinching just two bronze medals in judo and boxing.<\/p>\n
