{"id":369812,"date":"2017-11-09T16:11:12","date_gmt":"2017-11-09T16:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=369812"},"modified":"2017-11-10T03:11:06","modified_gmt":"2017-11-10T03:11:06","slug":"colleges-of-education-still-closed-as-talks-over-arrears-fail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/11\/colleges-of-education-still-closed-as-talks-over-arrears-fail\/","title":{"rendered":"Colleges of Education still closed as talks over arrears fail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dialogue between the government and striking members of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), yielded no result as the\u00a038 Colleges across the country remain closed.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting called by\u00a0the government\u00a0in an attempt to get the teachers to call off their\u00a0strike, ended without any concrete assurance to CETAG.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;PT7ez2apAiMColDUM4HQtMhH9MljCc0c&#8221;]Members of CETAG <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/11\/02\/colleges-of-education-teachers-on-strike-over-unpaid-salaries\/\">have been on strike<\/a><\/strong><\/span> since November 2, 2017, demanding the immediate payment of their nine-month salary arrears, allowances and market premiums.<\/p>\n<p>CETAG is also seeking improved conditions of service.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for ETAG, Charles Amoah Adjei, noted that the Finance Minister was noncommittal as far as their demands were concerned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026upon\u00a0deliberations\u00a0and\u00a0consultations, we\u00a0realized\u00a0that the money cannot be paid instantly. So we are of the view that the government should\u00a0commit itself by writing to tell us that we are going to pay the allowances by the end of November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Finance Ministry representative, however indicated the need for consultation with her superiors before any\u00a0decision\u00a0is taken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll that we told them was that; we are waiting patiently for them to come out with a written document\u00a0indicating\u00a0that the\u00a0arrears\u00a0will be paid at the end of the month. When we get this, we will gladly move to the classroom. If not, we will continue with the strike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The National Labour Commission (NLC) has made pleas to CETAG <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/11\/03\/nlc-begs-colleges-of-education-tutors-to-call-off-strike\/\">to reconsider<\/a><\/strong><\/span> their decision to strike but to no avail.<\/p>\n<p>CETAG has lamented that, despite a directive by the commission asking the Ministry of Finance to pay the arrears within two weeks, its members are yet to be paid.<\/p>\n<p>According to them, per the migration of the tertiary statuses of the Colleges of Education following the passage of the Colleges of Education Act 847 in 2012, the teachers were expected to be paid the salary difference between their previous salary levels and the new salaries from January to September 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dialogue between the government and striking members of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), yielded no result as the\u00a038 Colleges across the country remain closed.
