{"id":3695,"date":"2014-03-04T09:05:39","date_gmt":"2014-03-04T09:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=3695"},"modified":"2014-03-04T09:05:39","modified_gmt":"2014-03-04T09:05:39","slug":"health-minister-criticizes-medical-school-admission-methods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/03\/health-minister-criticizes-medical-school-admission-methods\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Minister criticizes medical school admission methods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DOCTORS1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3696\" alt=\"DOCTORS\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DOCTORS1.jpg\" width=\"295\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a>The Health Minister, Sherry Ayittey, has criticized the mode of selection of students into the Medical and Dental schools and has called for changes.<\/p>\n<p>She said the practice where admissions were based purely on grades scored at the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) tendered to favour students from the limited well-endowed senior high schools and invariably rich homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe universities should do everything to modify the criteria to give equal opportunity to students in deprived schools,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ayittey was addressing the 54th Scientific Conference of the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) in Kumasi, urged innovative and equitable approach that would not disadvantage any group.<\/p>\n<p>She made reference to studies and experiences of South Africa where, students with rural background readily return to work and settle in those communities upon graduation.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister was emphatic that Ghana\u2019s example could not be said to be fair when applicants, representing the majority of the population were excluded.<\/p>\n<p>She spoke of the need for a comprehensive plan to address issues relating to selection into training schools, retention and distribution of health professionals.<\/p>\n<p>The five-day conference will discuss among others topics such as \u201cInjury as a Health Problem- the Role of Trauma Care\u201d, \u201cPre-hospital Care and Rehabilitation\u201d, \u201cFuture of surgery\u201d, \u201cReducing Global Burden of Surgical Diseases\u201d, as well as \u201cGeneral and Plastic Surgery\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It also saw the presentation of papers on maternal mortality, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, radiology and urology.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ayittey suggested to the College to consider establishing a Faculty of Emergency Medicine and Surgery to train specialists to focus on emergency care.<\/p>\n<p>Such specialists could provide the needed leadership for national emergency services.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: GNA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Health Minister, Sherry Ayittey, has criticized the mode of selection of students into the Medical and Dental schools and has called for changes.
