{"id":367454,"date":"2017-11-01T14:53:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T14:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=367454"},"modified":"2017-11-01T14:53:00","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T14:53:00","slug":"cj-orders-judges-to-wear-wigs-to-preserve-the-tradition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/11\/cj-orders-judges-to-wear-wigs-to-preserve-the-tradition\/","title":{"rendered":"CJ orders judges to wear wigs &#8216;to preserve the tradition&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, has directed all Judges to with immediate effect begin the wearing of the symbolic wigs during court sittings.<\/p>\n<p>The directive by the Chief justice also instructed judges to ensure they are fully attired in robes alongside the wigs.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;7SEOWAalqNTCvLbgpDIQgUif5rAyFZSh&#8221;]According to an internal memo from the judicial secretary to all judges, sighted by <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, the directive is to preserve the tradition and uniqueness of the work of Judges and the legal profession.<\/p>\n<p>It also explained that, the wearing of the wigs will enhance the security of judges and also provide them the needed protection and anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>Her ladyship Sophia Akuffo, also indicated that, the new directive is aimed at restoring the formal nature of court proceedings, and eliminate what she describes as the &#8220;creeping casualness in the judicial system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The directive is one of the notable decisions taken by the Chief Justice since her appointment in June 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m against lawyers advertising on social media \u2013 Sophia Akuffo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo in June 2017 during her vetting, said she does not endorse the practice of <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/06\/16\/im-against-lawyers-advertising-on-social-media-sophia-afuffo\/\">lawyers advertising their services on social media<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, the practice is \u201cdistasteful\u201d and amounts to \u2018touting\u2019, a behavior unacceptable by the bar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sophia Akuffo&#8217;s conservative leanings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She said, \u201cPersonally, I believe that dignity of the Bar is as important as the dignity of the judiciary, and the idea of lawyers touting themselves on social media is personally distasteful to me.
