{"id":366858,"date":"2017-10-31T06:17:27","date_gmt":"2017-10-31T06:17:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=366858"},"modified":"2017-10-31T06:17:27","modified_gmt":"2017-10-31T06:17:27","slug":"selling-vra-thermal-plants-a-bad-idea-tuc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/selling-vra-thermal-plants-a-bad-idea-tuc\/","title":{"rendered":"Selling VRA thermal plants a bad idea &#8211; TUC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has asked the government to halt plans of selling the Volta River Authority&#8217;s (VRA) thermal plants as advertised.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a meeting with President Akufo-Addo at the Flagstaff House in Accra, Secretary-General of the TUC, Dr. Yaw Baah\u00a0said his union is opposed to the sale of the thermal plants.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;JVvPTapQcmLyiDR1bYbkzINfbUs3O0ox&#8221;]&#8221;These strategic assets are so crucial for our industrial development and for the achievement of your vision for Ghana\u2026 we do not support the privatization of such important national assets. We believe that the VRA is more capable of managing these plants efficiently and effectively,\u201d Dr. Baah said.<\/p>\n<p>The government advertised the\u00a0sale\u00a0of at least a majority stake in specified thermal plants owned by the VRA in August, as part of efforts to restructure the energy sector.<\/p>\n<p>But this has been met with opposition from VRA staff who contend that such a move <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/09\/19\/selling-thermal-plants-wont-solve-vras-problems-staff\/\">will not solve problems<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in the energy sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Protect ECG workers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another point of contention in the energy sector that was touched on, was the\u00a0process to give the Electricity Company Ghana (ECG) out on concession, as part of the\u00a0Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Power Compact II\u00a0programme.<\/p>\n<p>Over 1000 workers of ECG, led by the Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU), have\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/03\/puwu-drags-ecg-mida-to-court-over-severance-package\/\">sued the government<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0over moves to hand over the operations of the company to a concessionaire without\u00a0plans of a redundancy package for them.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Baah\u00a0appealed to the President to intervene so that no worker of ECG loses his job following the plan to privatize it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I urge you, Mr. President, to ensure that the union is properly engaged so that Ghana can benefit fully from the compact.
