{"id":365645,"date":"2017-10-27T14:01:26","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T14:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=365645"},"modified":"2017-10-27T14:01:26","modified_gmt":"2017-10-27T14:01:26","slug":"kumasi-central-market-traders-besiege-kma-over-high-tolls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/kumasi-central-market-traders-besiege-kma-over-high-tolls\/","title":{"rendered":"Kumasi Central Market traders besiege KMA over &#8216;high&#8217; tolls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some aggrieved traders at the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/05\/11\/kumasi-minister-orders-traders-to-leave-central-market-footbridge\/\"><strong>Kumasi Central Market<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0today [Friday], besieged the offices of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to demand the reopening of their shops.<\/p>\n<p>They have given the Assembly a\u00a012-hour ultimatum to reopen the shops or face their wrath.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;qFlqaFc4D2dckefMo5FqnZJEiVUtqww8&#8243;]Citi News<\/strong> gathered that, 15 shops in the Central Market, were closed on Thursday, following a misunderstanding between revenue collectors of the KMA and the owners of the shops over the payment of daily tolls.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the traders said the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/02\/23\/firefighters-foil-arson-at-the-kumasi-central-market\/\"><strong>Assembly<\/strong><\/a><\/span> was charging them GHS 2.00 as market toll each day, instead of an agreed amount of 50 pesewas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-365715\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Kumasi-Central-market-women-1.jpeg\" alt=\"kumasi-central-market-women-1\" width=\"1040\" height=\"780\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maame Anima, one of the affected women,\u00a0told <strong>Citi News<\/strong> that they had agreed to pay GHS 1.00 as daily market toll, after a meeting with the heads of the Assembly, but the revenue collectors insisted on taking GHc 2.00 when they went round the stalls on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that, one of the revenue collectors physically assaulted a market woman after she refused to pay the GHS 2.00, insisting they had agreed to Ghc 1.00 at a previous meeting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-365714\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Kumasi-Central-market-women-4.jpeg\" alt=\"kumasi-central-market-women-4\" width=\"1040\" height=\"780\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But the Kumasi Mayor,\u00a0Osei Assibey Antwi, has discounted claims that the market women are being charged Ghc. 2.00 as market toll.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the charge is GHS 1.00, and that has been the amount set by the assembly some five years ago, but came into effect in October 2017.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-365713\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Kumasi-Central-market-women-3.jpeg\" alt=\"kumasi-central-market-women-3\" width=\"1040\" height=\"780\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;KMA has not increased the fee. The fee was fixed more than 5 years ago, but we have now enforced it\u00a0so\u00a0 we have not increased it.
