{"id":363903,"date":"2017-10-21T13:54:10","date_gmt":"2017-10-21T13:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=363903"},"modified":"2017-10-21T13:54:10","modified_gmt":"2017-10-21T13:54:10","slug":"thousands-walk-against-breast-cancer-in-koforidua","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/thousands-walk-against-breast-cancer-in-koforidua\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands walk against breast cancer in Koforidua"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of Ghanaians last weekend thronged the streets of Koforidua in the Easter Region to participate in the walk against breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The walk which is in its 7<sup>th<\/sup> year and aimed at increasing awareness about the disease was themed \u201cour breasts, let\u2019s check them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-364006 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/breast-care-walk-2017-4.jpg\" alt=\"breast-care-walk-2017-4\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The event was organized by the Breast Care International (BCI) in collaboration with the Peace and Love Hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>The enthusiastic walkers moved through some principal streets of Koforidua and held placards which read: \u201cbreast cancer is curable,\u201d \u201cbreast cancer is survivable\u201d among others.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-364008 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/breast-care-walk-2017-6.jpg\" alt=\"breast-care-walk-2017-6\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview, President of Breast Care International, and CEO of Peace and Love Hospitals, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, said, \u201cThe annual BCI Ghana Walk for the Cure has assumed a national character, attracting people from every strata of society, affirming that our awareness creation program has been embraced by all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are riding on this national acceptance to increase our visibility, and by extension, heighten and sustain awareness about this debilitating disease, which, but for our consistency, would have needlessly destroyed several precious lives and families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-364005 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/breast-care-walk-2017-3.jpg\" alt=\"breast-care-walk-2017-3\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the American Cancer Society, every 69 seconds a woman somewhere in the world dies from breast cancer; and a woman is diagnosed every 19 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>In Ghana, breast cancer continues to occupy the first position in mortality as far as cancers are concerned.<\/p>\n<p>Reports suggest that about 60% of patients report to the hospital at a late stage making it difficult to be cured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBreast cancer statistics would remain a scar on our conscience, if we do not collectively fight the condition as a National disaster,\u201d Dr. Wiafe added.<\/p>\n<p>The event coincided with the annual \u201cAkwantukese\u201d Festival of the people in the region, blending tradition with health, in an all-embracing event.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-364004 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/breast-care-walk-2017-2.jpg\" alt=\"breast-care-walk-2017-2\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Politicians, breast cancer ambassadors, the clergy, students, teachers, farmers and civil society organizations walked in solidarity for the cure.<\/p>\n<p>President of BCI was grateful to the headline sponsor, Delta Airlines and several reputable multinational organizations as well as individuals that supported the walk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: Breast Care International<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of Ghanaians last weekend thronged the streets of Koforidua in the Easter Region to participate in the walk against breast cancer.
