{"id":363558,"date":"2017-10-20T17:45:03","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T17:45:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=363558"},"modified":"2017-10-20T17:45:03","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T17:45:03","slug":"nana-addo-commends-mahama-rawlings-et-al-in-itlos-victory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/nana-addo-commends-mahama-rawlings-et-al-in-itlos-victory\/","title":{"rendered":"Nana Addo commends Mahama, Rawlings et al in ITLOS victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Nana Akufo-Addo paid tribute to successive governments which played a part in the favorable verdict by the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in the\u00a0maritime dispute with Cote d\u2019Ivoire.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Flagstaff House on Thursday night at a ceremony to celebrate the\u00a0ITLOS win, he stressed that the victory transcended partisan considerations.<\/p>\n<p>The Special Chamber of ITLOS\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/09\/23\/ghana-wins-maritime-dispute-case-against-ivory-coast\/\">unanimously declared<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>that Ghana had not violated Cote d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s sovereign rights in its oil exploration activities after arbitration began in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-363413\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Itlos-fete-4.jpg\" alt=\"itlos-fete-4\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis victory could not have been achieved through the actions of one person, one political party or one government. It has been a collective effort, and the important roles played by successive presidents and governments, should not be overlooked, discounted or understated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony was attended by government officials stretching back to the Rawlings administration, under which the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) was first established.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_363418\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-363418\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-363418\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Itlos-fete-9.jpg\" alt=\"President Akufo-Addo with the Jerry John Rawlings at the gathering\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-363418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Akufo-Addo with the Jerry John Rawlings at the gathering<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>President Akufo-Addo\u00a0said all these people \u201chave helped guarantee not only the possibilities of development, progress and prosperity of our country, but also that of successive generations of Ghanaians yet unborn, who will be beneficiaries of the revenues, hopefully, to be accrued from the commercial exploitation of our maritime resources and potentials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was under the leadership of my former boss, the former President of the Republic, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor, that GNPC was restructured to ensure that it focused on its core activity of exploration, and the promotion of the oil and gas potential of the country,\u201d President Akufo-Addo added.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, the late President, John Evans Atta-Mills, set up a 10-member Ghana Boundary Commission to undertake negotiations with Cote d\u2019Ivoire to delimit the maritime boundary.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-363417\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Itlos-fete-8.jpg\" alt=\"itlos-fete-8\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Following this, \u201cit was in 2014 that my immediate predecessor, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, took the courageous decision to initiate arbitration.
