James Milner says the number of minutes he gets at Manchester City will determine whether he signs a new contract.<\/p>\n
The England international has entered the final 12 months of his current deal at the Etihad Stadium.<\/p>\n
Four years at City have delivered two Premier League titles and successes in FA Cup and League Cup competition.<\/p>\n
Milner admits his preference would be to remain with the reigning English champions and compete for more major honours, but he has warned that he needs to be playing in order to commit.<\/p>\n
The versatile 28-year-old said: \u201cBasically, I want to be here \u2013 as long as I\u2019m playing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love it here and hopefully I can be here for a long time to come. But that\u2019s determined on how much football I get. I just want to feel like I\u2019m contributing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI played a fair amount last year \u2013 maybe not as many in the league as I would have liked \u2013 but I felt like I contributed to the trophies I won. That\u2019s what it\u2019s about.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you win trophies and you haven\u2019t played as much as you wanted, it can be frustrating. But that wasn\u2019t the case last year and hopefully it won\u2019t be this either.<\/p>\n
\u201cI played in important games at the end of last season, it was pleasing to help them win trophies.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s what it\u2019s all about, I want as many minutes as I can. Competition is tough, but when you get out there, you have to go and help the team.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been here four years now. There\u2019s big-money signings every year. You want to play against the top teams, play with the best players in the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe definitely have that at City. You test yourself every single day in training.\u201d<\/p>\n
Retaining the Premier League crown is a top priority for Milner and City this season, but he acknowledges that the chase is likely to be closer than ever \u2013 with all of the title hopefuls having strengthened over the summer.<\/p>\n
Milner added: \u201cIt\u2019ll be tight, it was very competitive last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would have thought it would be close. It\u2019s down to us to go out there and show we are the best, I suppose.\u201d<\/p>\n
