{"id":361956,"date":"2017-10-15T09:17:44","date_gmt":"2017-10-15T09:17:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=361956"},"modified":"2017-10-15T09:17:44","modified_gmt":"2017-10-15T09:17:44","slug":"gpha-security-bulldoze-portions-of-ave-maria-resort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/gpha-security-bulldoze-portions-of-ave-maria-resort\/","title":{"rendered":"GPHA security bulldoze portions of Ave Maria Resort"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is tension\u00a0brewing between the Ave Maria Resort in Tema, and the\u00a0Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), possibly over the\u00a0$1.5 billion Tema Port Expansion Project, which commenced in October 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Reports indicate that, staff of the Resort were accosted by some\u00a0security personnel of the GPHA on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>There were reportedly two GPHA pickups, two private vehicles, and a bulldozer brought\u00a0by the GPHA security personnel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-361961\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Ave-Maria-Resort-3.jpg\" alt=\"ave-maria-resort-3\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-361965\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/ffddce6f-3f6c-42e5-a39c-f8f5d3536f98.jpg\" alt=\"ffddce6f-3f6c-42e5-a39c-f8f5d3536f98\" width=\"600\" height=\"406\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Staff who reached out to <strong>Citi News<\/strong> noted that, there was some earth movement\u00a0by a\u00a0bulldozer which blocked the front gate of the resort, trapping staff and guests.<\/p>\n<p>Pictures from the scene show the aftermath of the bulldozer\u00a0activities, as the ground\u00a0was dug with pieces of demolished concrete structures.<\/p>\n<p>The Resort&#8217;s managers alleged that the GPHA has consistently employed intimidation tactics to forcefully remove the Ave Maria Resort for the past two years.<\/p>\n<p>Officials of the Port are not immediately available for comment on the matter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-361960\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Ave-Maria-Resort-2.jpg\" alt=\"ave-maria-resort-2\" width=\"600\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-361959\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Ave-Maria-Resort-1.jpg\" alt=\"ave-maria-resort-1\" width=\"600\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>About Ave Maria Resort<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ave Maria Resort is said to have been recommended to be preserved by the Center of the World Committee, as it is viewed as great value for Ghana&#8217;s tourism sector.<\/p>\n<p>The Resort has a long heritage\u00a0for\u00a0hosting the likes of Ghana&#8217;s First President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as a regular patron, and Queen Elizabeth anytime she visited Ghana.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The port expansion project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Meridian Port Services (MPS), is executing the port expansion project, and the GPHA,\u00a0according to a GNA report, has said that Ave Maria Resort has to be relocated to make way for the project.<\/p>\n<p>A former official of the GPHA, however, said they are yet to agree on compensation for the relocation\u00a0of the Resort.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, he gave the assurance that the two entities\u00a0were in talks to finalize it.<\/p>\n<p>The Tema Port Expansion Project, when completed in 2019,\u00a0is envisioned to allow the Tema Port to handle thrice its current traffic of about one million 20-foot Equivalent Units (TEUS).<\/p>\n<p>The project would also see the expansion of the Tema-Accra motorway into a six-lane road, with service lanes to ease traffic flow from the port.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is tension\u00a0brewing between the Ave Maria Resort in Tema, and the\u00a0Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), possibly over the\u00a0$1.5 billion Tema Port Expansion Project, which commenced in October 2016.
